Laptop will boot up and then shut off after five

If you are making it at least minutes then I would suspect an overheating problem with the processor. Check that your cooling fans stay running, then blow compressed air in all the vents to clear out dust and debris, Since that has happened, it be in your best interest to access the heatsink and processor, take the heatsink out and clean the top of the processor and re-apply a thin layer of thermal grease, re-install the heatsink.

Pxe-e61 media test failure

This POST error refers to possible fault with the disk controller or the hard disk. Most likely you have a faulty hard disk.
Try reseating the hard drive first and if the problem remains then you need to test the hard drive. Do this by removing the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and connect the adapter to a working computer's USB port. If this computer see this as an external hard drive and you can open the various folders and files, then the hard drive is OK and the fault is the disk controller on the laptop's motherboard.
If the hard drive is not recogonized then it is faulty and you need to purchase a new hard drive, install Windows etc. to get the laptop functioning again.

Shutting off

First off im affraid you cannot totally rely on ANY software with regards to Thermo sensing
they are only an indication and can be anywhere from 5 to 25 degreeC out, dont get me wrong
generally you can get a good indication but thats the best they can be. Listen for fans kicking in then staying on, keyboard getting warm to hot.
If the machine is just cutting out that would suggest power supply either charger fault etc (is the battery fully charged when it happens) or overheating, if its shutting down the first thing i would try is running in safe mode see how it performs, check for any spyware/virus, run
Hope helps for now let me know

Toshiba Satellite Goes completley off! Black screen, NO POWER!

Hi Steven, in my experience as a tech support agent, it seems that you're having an issue with your hard drive, sometimes it might also be an overheating issue, to be clear on that, please be sure to check the temperature of the computer when it shuts down, then the first symptom of the issue seems to be the clicking sound which ussually comes from the hard drive's reading head, this might indicate the hard drive is damaged and that it cannot perform as usual. The steps to troubleshoot the issue will be as follows; First please enter the BIOS/ System Setup of the system, by pressing the [Delete] as soon as the computer turns on several times, you will appear in a black or blue enviroment with some information from your computer. Check if the issue will happen there as well. Second, if the computer gets really hot at the point when it shuts down, please ensure that all the fans in the computer are running (you should be able to hear them), And be sure of the temperature when it shuts down, we must know if the computer is too hot to touch, or there is no problem with it. Third step, how long will the computer stay on? Will it always shut down at the same time?
The best solution for this issue would be to replace the hard drive, or defective fans depending on the troubleshooting results, if you're still within your 1 year warranty with Toshiba, you should contact their tech support team to replace the part.

As an aditional step to the troubleshooting you should also try to remove the hard drive, and let the computer on for as long as its necessary, to discard the hard drive from the issue, if it doesn't shut down then the hard drive seems to be the problem.

You may have to clear your browsers cache or raise it. (tools>options>etc) as for the laptop shutting off if your watching a video and it shuts off it could be that it's thinking it's idle and it's going into self standby mode or sleep mode.. Or it could possibly be overheating, if the bottom feels unreasonably hot try putting it up on something that can leave an open space in the middle.. They also sell laptop cooling pads fairly cheap that could help.

Laptop shuts down when moved around. I have a

Sounds like a Battery - AC Adapter problem. Do you have an Icon showing your battery level?

Do you have Windows XP? I'm guessing you do because of the memory upgrade.

If you have XP, go to Control Panel - Power Options and check you battery. Choose to show in task bar.

If you have a AC Adapter, the BIOS on your laptop will NOT charge the battery, but it will show that you are on AC (unless it's completely dead)

I'm guessing that if you only had 1g of memory, you have a pretty old laptop, and you probably should purchase a new AC Adapter, and a new Battery.
