This is one of several models that had a common problem. If set comes on with sound and you after a minute or two see a faint odd band of noise top to bottom on the screen to the right side C509 which is a .047 cap at 200 volts is bad.Cap is seen in attached photo(location marked and cap here gone). The cap when you locate it from the C509 number which is on top and bottom of board may have a crack or not---it is the cause of this problem. There is a hard way and a easy way to get at it--let me know and I will explain.3.00 part....................4_20_2012_7_24_56_pm.jpgPencil is point to location on Right side board seen from right side. 4_20_2012_7_26_02_pm.jpgThere are several brown caps here and some plugs here are removed.I would not try operation of the set in this condition too long.

I have a PT-53WX54J and it has double image and

If you cannot move a certain color, red or blue then you may have more going on than just an adjustment.

What you might be experiencing based on your symptom sounds like a damaged convergence IC.

With any Projection Television that has a damaged convergence IC, you do not want to continue the use of the set. If the IC’s continue to fail they will cause a short in the power supply and cause your television to not power up, and possibly damage the CRT’s in the set.

With that aside I have some support suggestions that I have put together that may help you make an informed decision.

You should be able to get a local service center to repair this at your house for between $350.00 - $450.00, If you want to repair this set yourself, I have some instructions below that will be a help to you.
While it is not a very hard repair, this repair can be a bit tricky. If you have a 45W soldering iron, solder, solder wick, and heat sink compound you can repair it yourself.

When you remove the old IC's, please be sure to remove all of the old heat sink compound, as it can act as an insulation for the new IC's and cause them to overheat. I usually clean the heat sinks with alcohol and a small rag.

There are two and large IC’s that control the convergence in a big screen set. Some of the newer sets only have one. If you only have one, it is right in the middle of the set on the center circuit board. They are secured to a very large aluminum heat sink. They will have a part number stamped on them that will start with an STKXXX-XXX, like STK392-110.

Along with the convergence IC’s there will also be some associated components that will need to be replaced as well. There are some resistors that are part of the convergence circuit that will be open and need to be replaced. Most likely these will appear charred in the center. If you have an Ohm Meter or a DVM, check all the resistors that are close to the IC’s and you should be looking for either ones that have opened or have changed values.

If one of the convergence IC’s are found to be bad, I would replace them both, if one has gone bad the other may go soon. I usually order my parts from Andrews Electronics in California, they will have the OEM components that you will need.
Their site is
http://www.andrewselectronics.com/welcome.aspx
And their phone number is a 24-Hour Order Desk: (800) 274-4666
I recommend the phone order so you can talk to the person about the different types of IC’s that are available.

I would also advise that the convergence IC’s be OEM or better, just because they are cheap does not mean that they are a good deal. I have seen the cheap IC’s fail after a short time, even though they look exactly like the OEM IC’s. I think that the bottom line is that you will get what you pay for when it comes to the parts.

You can also try
http://www.tvrepairkits.com/ , I have not tried them yet, but they do carry OEM or better parts.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.
If you need further assistance please comment to this post and I will try to help you further.

My sound is working, but

Hello,

Problem is in either power supply or the Y-Sustain board.

The Y-Sustain is a relatively large board out of which go connections to the side of the display; it's therefore closer to either the left or the right side of the display, has at least one rather large heat sink on it and fat power cables connecting it to the main power supply.

Often there are fuses on that board - one or more. Check those.

if they are blown you can try to replace them, but expect them to blow again - usually the whole board needs to be replaced.

I hope this will help in solving the problem....

If you try to adjust convergence with the flash focus, perfect focus, (depending on the make of your set) or by manual convergence and the lines will not line up or even move. Your symptom sounds like a damaged convergence IC.

*** VERY IMPORTANT NOTE***

If your set is not producing a clear picture and the colors are not lining up, do not continue to watch the set as this can lead to further failure and possibly damage the individual CRT's in the set.

I have repaired hundreds of these sets, so if you have any questions after reading the following, please reply to this post and I will help you in any way that I can.

While it is not a very hard repair, this repair can be a bit tricky

How do I tell if the IC's are damaged?
Since you cannot look inside of an IC, you will have to locate some of the components in the area around the convergence IC's. You may be able to see some resistors that have changed colors or you test a resistor and it no longer reads the value marked by the color bands or the printed value. You will have to replace the IC's and the supporting components.

When you remove the old IC's, please be sure to remove all of the old heat sink compound, as it can act as an insulator for the new IC's and cause them to overheat. I usually clean the heat sinks with alcohol and a small rag.

Top and bottom of screen

Press the "Aspect" button on the remote until the picture looks appropriate. You are probably trying to display a 4:3 ratio channel on your 16:9 ratio TV. You are probably viewing it in "zoom" mode, which does not stretch the 4:3 ratio video, but enlarges it until it fits the width of the screen, which zooms part of the video off the top and bottom of the screen.

Hi Their, I have a Panasonic

Please do us a favor and rate this solution after reading.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Hi. I bought the set

Simple old age or any kind of electrical overload can cause a capacitor to fail in any number of spectacular fashions. Normally the electrolytic capacitors just puff up and bulge out the tops of their metal casings, or they crack open and ooze blackish gunk. But, if there is a serious power spike or some kind of short circuit, they can actually explode loudly like a capgun.

These days many everyday electronics are manufactured with inferior quality capacitors (especially on the power supply circuit boards) that fail regularly for no good reason, so finding a scorched capacitor in your set is not unusual. If there are any adjacent capacitors of similar size in that area of the circuit board, then there is a good chance that they are bad as well, even if they do not exhibit the same obvious signs of failure.

The good news is that they are fairly easy to replace if you have any skill with a soldering iron.

Just be sure to replace them with ones of equal capacitance (uF) and voltage rating (V), and make absolutely sure to install them with the correct polarity orientation (look for the + - or the white line down one side).

For replacement capacitors, it is ok to go a little higher on the voltage rating for the new one but never lower. And the capacitance value should be exactly the same as the old one.
For example, it's ok to replace an old 1000uF - 35V capacitor with a new 1000uF - 50V one, as long as it physically fits into the space available.

I cannot say for certain what caused that particular capacitor to fail but you can certainly replace it and see if the unit will then function.

Good luck.

If you have any questions or require any further assistance please comment back on this page and I will endeavour to help you.

My pt47x54j went black during a movie. Light

YES, three blinks is error code for short protection. 98% of the time in this model it means one or both of the two STK-392-110 convergence chips is bad.

There is a easy way for you to confirm this. With the set unplugged remove the back cover. The two chips are 2 1/2 X 1 1/2 inches and black in color--they will have the STK-392-110 PRINTED ON THE FRONT OF THEM IN WHITE LETTERS.

They will be on Metal heat sinks with fins side by side.

What you want to look at is there are about a dozen light blue resistors around them--most will be marked 2.2 ohms.

Look carefully at the resistors--if even one is discolored or somewhat white in the middle you have found your problem.

They can be tested just like testing a fuse--should show as a short if you measure across them.

This repair involves replacing both chips and any bad 2.2 ohm resistors.

I have START TO FINISH, STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS REPAIR IN THIS SET.

If you have some skill at soldering etc--the instructions will tell you everything you need and how to do the fix yourself.

Most shops are going to get 300 or more for this repair and some will not do it in the home.

You can buy a pair of the chips on Ebay (I can tell you the seller there I buy from) for about 12 dollars plus shipping---I have repaired hundreds of these sets--it takes about a hour or so.

Let me know if you want the instructions and I will post them here---

If this information has helped you rate this solution as I do this here for FREE.

What is convergence output circuit or convergence

They are pair of ICs that line up the image projected by the three CRTs. If they fail you will see ghosting(color behind color) images. The ICs cost 30$ for the two of them, +10$ for thermal grease and may be another 10$ for the resistors. The service charge is gonna be around 150-200$.

Blinks 5 times with no picture

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded over.
