How do I install a recoil spring ?
Sometimes the hook at the end of the starter spring has broken off from rust or has straightened itself out. What I do if I don't have time to get a new spring is make myself a hook and attach it to the notch. Then you have to manually wind the spring in the right direction and hope that the spring doesn't unravel on you. Wear safety goggles for that!
If I need to get it started without the recoil spring, I just wrap the starting rope around the engine and start it that way until I have time to get a new part. I’m happy to help further over the phone at

I am replacing the spark
I'm guessing you have a standard Champion J19LM plug, which has a gap of .030. They come pre-gapped from the mfg. and usually no need to adjust them. Most of the plugs on these engines have a .030 gap. There are very few exceptions that use a .020 gap (such as the RC12YC). Anyway, here's a link to a chart I like to use for reference: (there's a drop down menu at the top to change engines, but the standard Briggs engine is the one here).
