I am considering buying a
I don't really think there is much truth to that. Think out outside air conditioning units. They use the same freon and compressors and work quite well in warm temps.
Freon does expand and freon's basic boils at a temperature that is optimal for the operating conditions of a typical air conditioner. The warmer it gets outside, the cooler the freon get inside.

Very old U Line freezer and ice maker I am trying
Does the ice maker work? If it does it may just need an o ring or washer where the waterline connects to the ice maker. You can also remove the supply line from the valve and cap it.You will not have automatic ice but trays are cheap at the dollar store.hkjohn

I have a U-Line model
Look at the thermostat and at the programmer/control board - they are the ones that control the power to the compressor. Check first that the power is transmitted to the compressor, then if it's received. If it's received you can do one more check of the compressor - connect it directly to the mains, if it's good it should start.

Does not make ice consistently
Hi, If you can move the wires at the board and it works for awhile, look the wires over good, but you will more then likely need to replace this board. I wouldn't recommending soldering it as you are taking a chance on soldering other parts of the circuit together causing more problems. I have soldered boards, blower boards on a/c & heating equipment, as I have the know how, but you should look into the price of a new board. You will need to go to a appliance parts store to get it or order one. I wish you the best of luck on this and was hoping to save you money. If you want to try and solder, you really don't have anything to loose, as if it does not work, you will need a new board anyway, so give it a try. If I have been of help to you, please rate me and I ask that you be kind when doing so. This would be very kind of you for doing this. Please keep me posted on this.
Sincerely,
