Hi, I apologize in advance for not offering a solution. Have just trolled through the handbook (on-line) for anything that might offer a clue. It takes both high and low impedance units so that's cool. They say to use the phones to assist with speaker issues and there's nothing to suggest that any of the settings affect them. Depending on the impedance the volume levels can change a fair bit so I guess you've cranked it up to check. The fact that they turn off the speakers doesn't add a lot, it can often be a simple mechanical switch in the socket when the plug is inserted. Does the 'speaker off' indicator come on when you plug them in. The only other things I'd suggest is both try another set of phones regardless and the other is reset all the sound settings to factory and see if that has any affect. Else you likely have an issue with the phone interface circuitry.

It needs repair probably output transistors and resistors. Est $100-$120 for parts and labor.

Have you looked in the manual? Basic speaker setup with test tones will certify the basic hardware. Then onboard FM. Then add the compexity of external and digital sources.

Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'nekkid'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Check for loose speaker connections at the speaker as another possible root cause for intermittent shutdown.

Hi, you have a short somewhere along your speaker wire. When the receiver goes into protection mode, it shuts itself down so you don`t blow your on-board audio amp.

If you see protect come up on your Receiver, you have got a short somewhere. What`s happening is your receiver is sensing an overload somewhere in your system and if it does not go into protection mode and shut down , there will be permanent damage done.

You will need to check the speaker wire if it is not bridging somewhere or sometime else..

If you don't have a center channel you will experience this problem. The center channel is where all dialog is sent to. To fix it, you need the set the receiver to phantom center. Go into the setup menu into speaker setup and tell the receiver that you dont have a center channel installed. Once you do that, it will send dialog the the front left and right speakers.

Take a pair of pliers on make sure all capacitors or srtaight and not leaning to the side.

First of all check that it has not got switched off somehow. After that, what I would do is trace the wires back (inside the unit) from the center speaker connector. This will take you back to the output semi-conductors for that channel. I would suspect these first, you might even see damage! You should anyway be able to look the numbers up on the net. If they are cheap I would replace them anyway. If that doesn't work I suggest you hunt down the service manual, it might have suggestions in it.

My receiver say's "Protect" or turns on then off. What's wrong? Seven times out of ten it is a shorted speaker or speaker wire. To determine your exact problem, the first step is to disconnect all speaker wires "at your receiver" Next: Turn the receiver back on. Now, within any speaker there are quite a few possibilities as to what could be causing the problem. Most common is a blown coil and the speaker needs to be replaced. Some speakers have internal crossovers (usually floor standing speakers) and may have a shorted or burnt board (usually very visible brown burn marks on the board) and can possibly be repaired if your handy with a soldering iron. Now, if you disconnect the speaker wire at the speaker and it still says "protect" Check your wire for the obvious cut or nail thru the wire if possible. If your system has wiring that runs behind walls, you may need to use your meter again. Disconnect the wire at both ends, keep the ends separated, put your meter on ohms resistance and touch probes to the + and - wires at one side. If the meter pegs to the right or reads "1...." the wire is shorted and needs to be replaced or repaired at the short. Hope this helps.

if the speakers are more watts than the amp puts out or if u have to many speaker wires laced into one port the protect mode will switch on

first- is the tuner set to mono or stereo? if stereo, stop using the analog rca jacks and use an optical (toslink) cable to transfer your audio to your receiver. almost all cd players have this output and the same with the receiver. better still, if you are using a late model cd or bluray, and your receiver has hdmi inputs use those as they will transfer both audio and video with one cable.
