There is about a four inch wide bar at the top of

Hello
That fault is called vertical foldover, and it is mainly due to some fault in the vertical output section inside the circuit borad of your tv. It may be due to some capacitor problems or an Ic fault. To rectify the problem, you shoud open your tv. Take every precautions before opening the tv, while we take working with an electrical equipment. As high as 30,000VDC points are there inside your tv, while it is working, or even after that, the picture tube's final anode will have a charge equal to the voltage said above, for a long time, you should be very cacutious.
Open your Tv, and locate the vertical output section. It is easy to locate. As you open your tv, you can see the vertical deflection yoke, the coil fitted around the neck of the picture tube. From it, there will be four wires going to the main printed circuit board, out of which, two will be thick, normally red and blue coloured, and the other two will be thin. Follow the the two thin wires, you will see it to be connected to a plug in point on the printed circuit board. just upside down the printed circuit board without distrubing any of its plug in connections, and follow the underside circuit track, and it will guide you to the vertical output section.
There you can see an Integrated Circuit, otherwise known as [IC], screwed onto a metal heatsink, to radiate the heat out ot it while it is working. Just resolder all the leg solderings of that Ic first, and switch on the tv to find there is any change to the vertical foldover. Usually these points will get loose contacted, as they are heated and cooled repetadly. Sometimes this process may resolve your problem.
If not, change the supply filter capacitor, that filters the input supply voltage to that IC. It is best to change the filter capacitor said above, and all the capacitors in that section, which will not cost too much. When replacing capacitors, keep a keen look on its polarity, where electrolytic capacitors ahve positive and negative legs marked on it, it should coincide to that of the markings on the printed circuit board, otherwise there is a chance for them to explode out.
You just concentrate only on this section inside your TV, since the fault is surely there. Just proceed with confidence. You will and you can. Wish you sucess.

There is a big square on my television and it is

If it is a black box in the middle of the screen it should only appear on certain channels.

Go to closed captions either on the set or a box if you are using one; black box is usually TEXT, something designed to send text like books etc but it never really did take off.

Look in set and box menu under CC and if TEXT 1 is highlighted in either, turn it off or select something other than TEXT !.

If this told you something you did not know rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

If you have questions or need help, comment here and I will assist you.

When I try to turn

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, the described problem with the JVC AV-32D305 would indicate a power supply problem. While this could be nothing but a secondary fuse that blew or a component failure, it could also be caused by failure of the power supply to fully turn on either:
  • auto-protect has kicked in to prevent further damage;
  • the power supply itself has faulted and could not produce sufficient voltage to operate the unit.

This is then a hardware fault and would require that the unit be opened up to effect repairs.

Options then are:
  • consider a DIY (do-it-yourself) repair if and only if comfortable working with electronic components & circuitry, use of a DVM/VOM, a soldering iron/station and safe practices with electrically powered devices. Access to a Service Manual or at the very least, a schematic diagram would be a necessity;
  • should you be uncomfortable with a DIY, perhaps your best bet would then be to consult with and/or seek the services of an authorized Service Center or a qualified professional;
  • evaluate other options considering cost of repair, down time, cost of shipping, parts availability and comparable prices of newer/better models.

Offhand, if a DIY is being considered:
  • the Service Manual is available here;
  • preliminary checks include test of the HOT (horizontal output transistor) Q511, a 2SD2645-YD;
  • if HOT shorted, ring test of FBT (flyback transformer) T502 QQH0154-001;
  • VOut IC421 (LA78041);
  • switching regulator IC911 (STR-G6624/F8);
  • and its associated components such as zener D917 (MTZJ30A-R22;
  • reverse protection D910, MA700A (among others).

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Why can't I use my dvd player with this model?

You may need to buy a signal converter to do this. You can get one at your local radio shack. A old vcr would also work. Some dvd players work best with s-video so you could try that also.

My tv turns on fine after a few min the picture

The set has bad solder connections, specifically in the vertical output section. When you whack the set, the connections work for a while so the full picture comes back. Then, when they open up again, you're back to black. A service technician with a soldering iron could fix this easily, and the cost would be far less than the price of a replacement.
