My LG 42PX5D 42 in. plasma is about 15months old and suffers badly from "sparkles" during light to black transitions when displaying Sky digital TV pictures. I have changed to satellite to TV scart cable to a heavy duty gold plated version but no improvement was shown. Does anyone one know what might cause this "sparkling" problem and how it might be cured?
Makes you wonder why nobody is taking on the problem, doesn't it?
Well , to the best of my knowledge, it is because nobody really can.
To understand why you have to understand what do they sparkles come from.
They are random electricity discharges coming from capacitors or other components that act like capacitors, but mostly capacitors.
When laymen hear about capacitors they usually associate the word with bulged electrolytic capacitors, which often cause problems in electronics of all kind.
Well this time it isn't about them.
It's about all other capacitors - or other components exposing similar qualities - which are installed on the board. Most of them are small filter capacitors put in parallel to the big ones or to other passive components such as diodes and resistors.
The excessive heat developed by the sustain boards damages those capacitors. It hardens the electrostatic material they are made of and small breaks in it start occurring at voltages that shouldn't otherwise be causing issues.
The trouble is, they can be everywhere. You can't just pinpoint which ones were caught at fault and causing the sparkles.
When it gets REALLY bad eventually the whole capacitor burns and either shorts or, more commonly, just breaks.
Believe it or not I've seen a board that exploded before my very eyes and , after the explosion, started working LIKE A CHARM!
Turned out a small filter capacitor had blown. It as not essential for the board's functionality and after being problematic for so long and causing image deffects it had eventually shorted completely and literally exploded.
Luckily, the short it had created was too short in time and apparently in a circuit that could take the load for a short while without getting damaged.
So after it blew everything worked just great!
it's a real story from my repair experience.
Hope this helps all consumers, DIY enthusiasts and competitors alike :-)

Hi my 42 lg plasma has coloured lines all over it this morning i can hear the channel in the background there is no picture just the coloured lines and idea what is wrong and can it be fixed?thanks
I dont know the model of this televsion its 3 years old
If the Video (Picture/Pix) is gone but you can hear the Audio (sound), then it could mean the YSUS PCB Assembly is gone/kaput/finish. Can replace the PCB, not repair the PCB due to timing circuitry involve. Cost maybe roughly $500 depending where you located. The PCB is located on the left hand side of your TV when you are facing the back (Back open). Might find 3-4 brown flex membrane connecting to the plasma panel. The PCB has a silver or black aluminum heatsink (big) on it.
Good Luck.

I have a 42in LG plasma tv, it has sound and no picture. What could be the problem? Give me an estimated cost of repair.
Thanks james
Hi James,
This could be one of two problems. I can't narrow it down any further without having the set in front of me.
1. The plasma panel or the componets which supply electricity to the plasma in the panel have packed up.
2. The video processing unit in the set has gone.
As for the cost of repair, if it's the panel, buy a new TV. It'll be cheaper. If it's the component that supplies the electricity to the plasma on the panel or the video processing unit, expect to pay between 300-400 as a conservative estimate for parts. Labour would be another 100-200.
Hope this helps

MY SON HAD THE TV ON MUTE LAST NIGHT AND TURNED IT OFF. NOW WHEN WE TURN IT ON IT HAS NO SOUND. WHAT'S UP????
You did not give a make and model for the TV so I can only offer a general solution. You may need to reset the sound board. This can be done simply by unplugging the TV for about 10 minutes.
