Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer. The best way to transfer pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries. Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Assuming it isn't physical damage caused by a drop or by spills then it will probably be the connection on the sub board. The buttons are mounted on a small board that gets connected by a ribbon cable to the main board in the G series. The cables do come loose in electronics (and cameras) and the connection can corrode.If you hadn't banged or dropped it or spilled then corrosion would look more likely. Unfortunately the G's require almost total dis-assembly to get at this board. A regional repair depot or Canon can look at it for you.You should be able to get this one done on a flat rate repair if you do not have any warranty. If this were casued by a spill or just humidity etc then the camera has to be either put in a partial vacuum or disassembled to get that out. Applying heat even for a few weeks will not work as the body inside sees no airflow and may cause additional damage. Best advice on this is to call the Canon support line and take to them about getting it repaired. I don't know your location but if you go to www.canon.com and pick your location then click on support you will see toll free support phone numbers for your area. Give them a call and they can either tell you a local shop to take it to or to send it to them etc. The local shop will be a certified repair depot so doesn't matter and will do the flat rate as well.

Replace the LCD cable. Not expensive and easy to replace. Try eBay for a replacement.

Try this it may work. Turn on the camera. While still on remove the battery. Leave for 30 secs and reinstall the battery while still in on mode. Switch off and switch on. This may work to reset.

This is a common problem on the Canon G12. It has something to do with the CCD Sensor yet Canon doesn't acknowledge it to be a problem. To get this fixed, I would suggest: www.camerasandparts.com All they specialize in is the Canons. It's $89 through them to fix that common problem, plus they service the camera and do the internal correction to prevent this from reoccurring again on the camera. They tend to be the best bet for the Canon's, definitely for this issue, they'd be the place. Good luck

You may have the exposure compensation settings overexposing you images. Since it compensates without affecting the image prior to shooting, you won't see it until after the image is taken. Check that and the flash exposure compensation too.

Get it serviced by a professional shop. It's probably the CCD that is giving you a problem, those are the classic symptoms of that sensor failing. CCD Problem. Go to this site: www.CamerasAndParts.com They have a fix for this problem on the G12. They are super for help with the Canons.

Look at your memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

The only real way to fix this is to have it serviced. It's not expensive depending where you go. The best place for repairs on the Canons and the only place we really recommend is: www.CamerasAndParts.com They only work on Canons and they are about half the cost of most shops. Plus, this place includes everything right down to the cleaning and service for the camera. They are excellent, your best bet since you have a Canon.

If taking the battery out for at least 15 minutes, pressing the power button without the battery in the camera, and then after you put the battery in the camera doesn't work to fix a problem you can reset the camera to factory settings like this:

1. Press the "Menu" button. Press the right arrow once to highlight the "Setup" menu.
2. Press the down arrow five times to select "Reset All." Press the "Set" button.
3. Press the right arrow button once to select "OK." Press "Set."

The Display button toggles the information shown on the LCD (or turns it off entirely). Make sure you haven't inadvertently pressed it and turned off the display. It works as follows:

• Press once for Normal view in LCD viewfinder
• Press twice to turn on Rule of Thirds grid lines
• Press three times to turn off LCD display
• Press and hold 1 sec. to decrease/increase LCD brightness

Try pushing the up arrow on the control wheel if you hear no sound during playback of a movie from the G12. The up/down arrows control audio volume during playback.
