ELX8000 portable
Where the portable generator starts without a problem but cuts out intermittently, you might well be overloading it. Bear in mind that all generators have a maximum load that they can handle. If you go above this limit, they'll cut out because they can't handle the surge in power or a faulty regulator
.
If there seems to be no output from your portable generator, take your voltmeter, start the generator and check the output. It should generate a voltage of between 125 to 135 volts when off-load with a supply of about 63 Hz. Once a load is applied, the figures should change to 110 volts and 58 Hz.
If the generator isn't supplying these voltages, the problem will either be in the governor, exhaust system, piston rings, valves or in the engine. Under these circumstances, have a professional examine the portable generator instead.

HOW MUCH OIL AND WHAT TYPE FOR BRIGGS STRATTON
imogenerhode-
This engine takes a four cycle engine oil. SAE 30 weight should work fine. Any oil made for lawnmowers would do.
You may find the troybilt manual for this unit at:
LinkThe briggs and stratton manual can be found at their website at:
Link. To look find the correct manual you will need to find the model and revision number from the inner side of frame, next to the engine. The model number will be a six digit number and the revision number should be two digits.
If you have found this helpful please take a moment to give me four thumbs up.

I have a Troy Built 5550 KW generator and I have
The most likely thing is the neddle valve inside the carbubator is stuck This is the valve that controls the fuel devery to the engine . The valve rests on top of the floats when the bowl is full it shuts the gas off to the carbatur bowl and when the engine sucks the fuel from the float bowl the floats drop this opens the neddle valve and lets more fuel into the bowl and dose it over again . If the valve gets stuck no fuel can get into the bowl and the engine woun't run . This is vary common with mechines that don't get used every day the gas gets old and the valve has a rubber tip at the seal and they stick. What you need to do is drop the float bowl off the carb there will be one bolt on the bottom of the bowl remove it the bowl will come down don't disturb the gasket on it . Then you will see the floats slide the pin out they will drop out and the valve is on top of that but be carful this is a five munite job but don't loose and parts there vary small and don't try to bend anything just letting the floats drop down could fix the problem and put the bowl back on so don't take the floats if you don't have to Good luck this will fix it

Ok, well if NO spark, then it's back to the, spark plug lead, Coil, or the "Points" (Or whatever electronic unit that takes the place of it), then back to the Generator/Alternator, that supplies power to the electrics of the generators motor.
Replace spark plug leads first, then the Coil, replace it, Then Ignition system, But after testing to see there is Voltage from the Generator/Alternator, 12 V DC usually.
Below are a couple of sites to assist you in troubleshooting.

Won't start:
I have a tested
You can "bypass" the starter solenoid and hook your 12 volts straight to the starter but it has to be a temporary contact. You can not leave it hooked up. You do need to be careful as sparks can come from this type of connection.
If you are not getting voltage on the "outlet" side of the starter solenoid then your solenoid may be defective. It is just a switch that transfers battery voltage to the starter, once the engine starts it is no longer needed, except to start the engine again.
You may have other issues. Not knowing exactly what model engine you have, there could be some internal issues that is making the engine difficult to turn over. If this is an OHV engine, the valve settings may be off that affect the compression release. The starter motor will not turn the engine over under "full" compression.
We have also seen carburetor issues that create "flooding" conditions and the combustion chamber will fill with fuel and the engine will not complete a revolution when trying to start.
Hope this helps to get you in the right direction.

Have B&S 7500 Vanguard Genset. No Output.
Hi, a word of caution, use a 9volt battery instead of 12v to check the rotating field winding. The 12volts from a car battery or battery charger can burn out windings in a generator. I would say that your avr is pooched. There are 4 leads that go back to the windings in the generator from the AVR. Two of these are connected to the power output and two go to a separate winding in the generator. This is the exciter winding and this supplies power to the avr for the rotating field. The two to the power output are voltage reference only. If your generator has these exciter winding, you should check if you have voltage there with the 9 volts applied to the rotor. If you have voltage on the power output and not on the exciter, then the exciter is shot and your avr might not be. Try this first, if you could, could you take a picture of the windings at the back end of the generator, this will confirm for me what leads you have present.

I have a briggs and
Spraying carb cleaner into the carb doesn't clear the gummed gas that is clogging the supply of gas to the carb. Remove all of the gas. Put a little fresh gas and carb cleaner (about 50/50) in the tank. Try to get that to run (spray more carb cleaner or instant start into the carb to help it start - you might have to do that a couple of times). If it does start, let it run out of gas then refill the tank. If that doesn't work remove the bowl from the carb and clean the float valve and the mixture valve.
Good luck,

I've found the fuel shutoff valve. How can I tell
Usually, the fuel shutoff valve is open in the vertical position and closed when horizontal...very similar to a gate valve...open when handle is parallel to piping and closed when perpendicular to plumbing pipes.

I have an 8000 Watt generator, Model number
You need to try to flash the rotor and stator. Plug in a corded drill and hold the trigger and spin the chuck very fast . This will create enough electric to re energize the magnetic field

It is always good to have the voltage set down by a small percentage and so the setting you have is quite good because most devices work happily with a lesser voltage than a higher one except those consuming higher currrent.
Now if you set the generator for the higher rating with the connected load and when the device is not used the voltage will rise above and may damage sensitive equipments. So take this tip.

Briggs and stratton 8000 watts
Voltage is adjusted by increasing rpm of engine. Use meter with Hz setting and try to adjust to 60 cycles and check voltage to be at about 115-120. If engine is turning 3600rpm/60 cycles and voltage is very low, then problem is most likely with brushes/ commutator rings, or voltage regulator. Some voltage regulators have an adjustment screw to bring voltage up/down (adjust to proper rpm/cycles first). Good luck

Wheelhouse 5500 Genarac Generator Replace rear
the gen head will need to be removed if it in on that side and the flywheel side should be done as well the seals can be purchased from any auto parts store with using the numbers off the seal some engines need to be split do to the seal needs to enter from the inside side if this is the case reseal the hole engine i suggest you get a small engine repair manual or the manual for your unit this will be a involved undertaking removing the gen head can be tedious and special tools will be required so no damage to it hope this helps
