hello , well i use a pump, but since you don't have one the easiest way to change oil is to remove the dip stick and turn mower on side with the filler tube faceing down to drain oil,be sure and put a pan down to catch the old oil,and put fresh 20o/z of fresh 30 WT,oil in.hope this helps, any comments welcome, thank you.
Craftsmanship in the USA? Ah, that is a good one for this day and age. Besides the fact that most ALL of the large American corporations have outsourced the manufacturing of their goods abroad, I guess craftsmanship is still alive and well in a few places here. Anyway, Poulan is mostly Chinese or Mexican, Briggs is an American made product and you may notice that a Poulan product will say "Assembled in USA" which is NOT the same as Made in The USA....but, I digress....we have mechanical dragons to slay right now!
I suspect a fuel flow problem. I usually instuct people to pull of the brass bolt that holds the float bowl onto the carburetor body and check it for debris, gum, varnish or the like. I would be a little surprised if THAT is the problem with this new mower...but if it has been used without a fuel filter, that COULD be the case. Drain the fuel, remove and clean the bowl and inspect the bolt that holds it on,,,or....if still under warrranty...(most likely it is)...see if the brainiacs at the Poulan factory authorized shop can find the problem (not trying to be smart, just saying). Post back, because I love a challenge and MOST PEOPLE on here don't post back which is really starting to bug me!
Sounds like you need a new diaphragm kit which goes between the fuel tank and the carburetor. I just found out that they actually sell these at Lowe's now:
Item #: 21969. Replacement of this kit is better left to a professional, if you're not sure what you're doing. But if you're able to do it yourself, it will set you back a whole $3 USD. Best of luck. James
You probably need to clean the carb and possibly replace the gasket/diaphragm underneath it. If you are a do it yourselfer then you can do this. Otherwise take it to a professional. If tackling this yourself, first remove the gas tank and carb as one unit, be very careful to note where the springs are hooked up. Drain the gas. Remove the 5 Philips head screws holding the carb on. Underneath the carb will be a rubber diaphragm and gasket (careful; there's a tiny spring under there; don't lose it!). Spray out the carb with carb cleaner and spray out the little holes and cutouts on top of the tank. Replace the gasket/diaphragm (about $3 USD) and put it all back together. I hope this helps and best of luck to you.James
Either the primer bulb item 976 has a pin hole in it or... the diaphragm item 394 has a pin hole in it.
Given the cost of both parts I would replace them both and send you on your merry way if you brought it to me for repair.
There are 2 part numbers for the diaphragm. 795083 (Most models) and 796478 used on type 156 models. The type number is usually on the air shroud near the spark plug.
The primber bulb 694394 is common to both engine types.
As I mentioned earlier one of these items has failed. I recommend you replace them both and your mower will run fine. (
The gas tank and carb have to be removed as an assembly before you can change the carb diaphragm once the tank is removed.
To me it sounds like it is starting and running off the fuel from the priming. You could try after it starts to hit the prime bulb just before dying to see if you can keep it running. If that works then I would say that something is blocking the little holes in the carb. Could be trash in the tank. Anyway I would get some carb. cleaner (can get it at the store he got the diaphram from or from walmart back in the automotive chemical section). Then take the carb. off and clean it out blowing the carb. cleaner through all passages making sure that the cleaner comes out somewhere else. It is a good idea to have a face shield or safety glasses for this because the cleaner can come back up at your face and you do not want this stuff in your eyes. Be careful and good luck.
you probably don't have any spark, so it will continue to flood , remove the plug, hook the plug wire back on the plug, holding the plug with a pair of insulated pliers , ground the bottom of the plug ( the little hook part) on one of the head bolts, and have someone pull the rope,, you should see a nice spark at the plug, and hear a snap, if you don't, you have a magneto problem, if you do get a spark, you need to readjust your carb
Your carburetor needs a good cleaning or a rebuild kit, depending on its condition once opened up. There are tiny holes (jets) in there that easily get clogged or gummed up with today's crappy gas (ethanol). This is the problem with 90 percent of the machines I work on or fix. If you don't know carbs, then I recommend you take it to a professional and have the carb done (30 to 40 USD, probably), but it should run like new, once this is properly done. If you are a "do it yourselfer". then you can find plenty of videos on youtube to help you get started. Just pay close attention to what goes where when you take the linkage apart. Trust me, do not leave it to memory; take photos. Best of luck to you.
