I may be wrong, but I believe this is a cable problem somewhere between the video source and the projector. The loss of colour would happen if you are using COMPONENT AV cables and one of the video cables is damaged or not fully connected in the socket.
Component used 3 cables for video, usually coloured red, green and blue. If you remove any one of these 3 cables, you will get a black and white picture. As it's flickering between B&W and colour, this suggests a loose connection either at one of the sockets on the projector, or one of the sockets on the video source. There could also be a partial break internally in one of these cables.
I would advise you to check all the plugs are firmly in the sockets and, if possible, switch out the cables one at a time.

Sorry I don't really have an answer I had the same issue with a Sanyo I had to keep putting back the old lamp and getting it to start on that one then shut down and swap, eventually it worked, it was a pain. in the end I bought an led projector for the price of a new lamp for the old one
