I have the Dayton G73

Yes you can move thermostat wherever you want but remember if not placed at a suitable location space may either be too hot or too cold .For example if you put it too close to the heater it will satisfy faster without allowing the whole space to warm up

You will need to replace the thermostat in the heater. Also, check for any dust and dirt buildup in the unit. Here is a link for the part for your heater.

The red power wire leading to the thermostat shows

Hi,
Not usually but it could...
It is more likely that there was and is a poor connection there...
Strip back the wire and reconnect it making sure that the connection is a very tight good one...

The unit seems to cut

No I would not think so, a thermostat is only to turn the heater on and off period. Now inside the heater there are controls that set when the blower is to come on usually set at 150 degrees and another to cool down the furnace and this is usually around 130 to 120 degrees. Again these tell it when to run and when to shut down, internally they call them high and low limit controls. I would try to locate the lower limit and boost the cool down temperature up to take care of this problem.
