Ice maker jams and pushes the freezer door open

If the device is making too much ice, there may be a problem with the shutoff arm and shutoff switch. Before you go ahead and start your troubleshooting, unplug the refrigerator. This is very important, otherwise you may get electrocuted. I assume that you have the basic knowledge of the working of electromechanical devices and know how to test them.

Test both the components. To do that you will have to remove the face plate of the device and test the components using the test probes underneath. In case, both are damaged, you will have to replace either or both. There may also be a problem with the thermostat that might be causing this. Test and replace the thermostat if you find it to be faulty.

Take care.

My GE fridge is icing up in the freezer part on

Most likely , the problem is a bad defrost heater , pt # WR51X10055 , but I would still suggest going thru the motions to make sure . The heater runs about $45.00 .
Pull the refrig out and remove the 8 " x 10 " panel . Behind this panel , is the main control board . Unplug the refrig . Remove the BLUE plug from the board , with 3 larger wires going to it . Looking at the blue plug , the sequence will be wire1,wire2,space,wire3 . Get a short piece of insulated wire , and strip about 1/4 inch from each end . Insert 1 end into wire2 , and the other into wire3 . Plug the refrig back in . After about 3 min , look in the freezer , at the bottom , behind the crisper , look for a red glow . If no red glow , unplug the refrig , and reassemble the plug and cover . This no glow , indicates a shorted defrost heater WR51X10055 . It is also advisable to replace the defrost thermostat ( pt. number WR50X10068 ) when replacing the heater . To access these parts , you will have to remove the inside rear wall of the freezer . The heater , is at the bottom of the coils , held on with 2 screws , and the thermostat , is the 1 " cylinder , with a blue and pink wire going to it , clipped on the top left of the coils .
If you do get a red glow , then the # 4 thermistor is bad . This tells the main control board , the temp of the coils , if they need defrosted , when they are thru defrosting . This thermistor is the 1 " long , torpedo looking piece , clipped on the top left of the coils , with 2 white wires going to it . Part number WR55X10025 . It would be advisable to also replace the # 5 thermistor , located at the bottom of the freezer , slightly in front of the drain , also with 2 white wires going to it , slid into a housing . This thermistor , is the freezer thermistor , which tells the control board , the freezer temp and when to cycle off due to selected temperature .

Water dispenser dripping...

May be you can. Just check if your drip tank is full and if it is forcing the overflow. If it is not that, check the opening to the drip tank and see if it is closed with ice or something similar. If it is not that bath, then i'm sorry but you have to turn off the water supply line.

Why is our fridge frozen

Hi!!

The evaporator fan (little fan in freezer), is the one that blows cool air to the fridge. If your evaporator is freezing up, it could be due to the thermostat set too high, and the fridge control set too low. Set freezer temp. one number lower, wait 24 hrs and check, if evaporator still freezes, lower it one more setting. If temp in fridge is OK. leave it alone, or adjust accordingly.

Let me know how it worked out.

Good Luck!!

Freezing in refrigerator. Controls set

Hi,

Thanks for using FixYa. Food freezing is most times due to a bad cold control, but there are other things to check for. Make sure the condenser fan is working and the coils are not covered with dust. A poor working evaporator fan motor could also make the fridge run too long and freeze - replace the fan motor. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

Lower part of fridge freezes no matter what the set ting.

IM guessing your icemaker is not working either. these symptoms are caused by your evaporator fan motor not blowing air throughout cabinet. However, your problem could be the motor itself not operating correctly, wr60x10185, or the main control board is not operating correctly, wr55x10942. the problem with the board can and often will be caused due to a faulty motor, so both have to be replaced. It would be much too long for me to explain how to test everything you need to test to see source of problem, but your symptoms are definitely caused by that fan motor not running.

How many hours does a refrigerotor actually work?

If what you are asking is how often does it run, well, there are so many variables that factor into it, there is no "set" amount of time that a refrigerator is supposed to run. Refrigerators run when its not cold enough inside the unit. Things that can cause fluxuations to the actual run time; if the doors are opened frequently and for how long, the amount of food you have inside it, how clean/dirty your condensor coil is, the proximity of the unit to a heat source, the ambient temperature of the room it is placed, and the age of the unit, the physical condition of the unit itself. What I can tell you is the normal run time / idle time should be relatively equal. So if it runs for 50 minutes, and is idle for 50 minutes, thats good, If it runs for 60 minutes and is idle for 20 minutes, that is not good. A lot of my potential customers ask a similar question as you, and my basic answer is, if the temperature of the unit is good, i.e. 35-40° in the fresh food section, and 0-10° in the freezer, with all settings at the normal, middle positions. If your only concern is the running time, but the temperatures are good, then there really is nothing to worry about. if your temperatures are not really cold and controls at coldest setting, or if its really cold in the entire unit and its at the warmest setting, then you have a problem.

People also ask, well, if its running longer, its using up more electricity. Assuming your fridge is well maintained, condenser coils are clean, etc., older fridges that run longer, run longer because the motors are weaker, thereby drawing less power than when stronger. so the electricity used is actually about the same. If your fridge when new used 4 amps, for 30 minutes, and now draws 2 amps for 60 minutes, your overall usage is the same.

Dispenses water for drinking but not to make ice

Your model refrigerator uses an electronic Ice Maker. You can test the Ice Maker by filling with tap water and let freeze sometimes they already have ice inside and shrinking because of defrost. If you can fill the trays with tap water and it freezes and dumps but does not refill with water the problem will be the water control valve. If ice maker does nothing and on then the Ice Maker is the problem. Try that first and let me know what you find, Sea Breeze

Flap does not close by

I have had the same problem. The issue is with the solenoid that opens the flap. For a temporary fix you can just squirt some oil on it. Remove the control panel (pull it towards you from the bottom). Disconnect the three connectors. Then unscrew the four screws in the panel behind the cover. You will see the solenoid on the top right. Just squirt some oil on it and it should get it working again for a while. For a long term fix order a new solenoid, they are about $25.

Side by side refrigerator the refrigerator does

Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.
