The FRS radios are 500 mW radios, which is not at all bad. Also, they are ~460 MHz radios which means they are pretty much line-of-sight, So, if you can see it you can talk to it. This doesn't mean you have to be able to see the radio, or person, but the location of the two.

Example: I had a dead 2 meter ham radio, it was putting out 15 mW of power, just the exciter no output power transistor working, I was almost home and I could still talk to my friends, the repeater I was talking to was 15 miles away up on a mountain I could see. As soon as I went behind another mountain I could no longer see the mountain with the repeater on it and could no longer talk to my friends. 2meters is ~146 MHz not 460 MHz but they are enough similar that your experience will be the same.

If you are in the woods the range will be much shorter, because trees, branches, leaves are closer in wavelength and will tend to absorb your RF power. Out in the open, on a beach, able to see the mountain location your friend is up on, you will probably be able to talk to him/her. In the city you are essentially behind mountains all the time unless you're both on the same straight street.

Sorry, there is no definitive answer here the distance you can talk depends on the stuff between you and the other radio. I hope that helps.

Oh, one last piece of information - for fun only - If you were in outer space then the distance you could talk could be pretty much calculated by the inverse square law, in other words the distance away you are is the only factor effecting how much power is getting to the other radio and so it can be calculated depending on the output power of the radio, the receiver sensitivity (how much power does it need to receive to hear the other radio), and how far away you are.

  • This radio is a standard FRS handheld. Unfortunately these antennas are not replaceable nor do they make them in an aftermarket aspect. If the antenna is no longer working or broke then the radio[s] need to be replaced. No way around it, sorry,.

  • Hope this helps.

It all depends on the location. Being VHF and not using a repeater or external antenna, the range is likely less than 10 miles. Using a repeater you might get 50 miles or more. If you are thinking long range communications, you really need an HF transceiver. VHF is essentially for local communications.

If you get clear audio when close to the receiver, it would appear to be a problem in either the antenna or the receiver. Try a different antenna or relocate the antenna. If you adjusted the VSWR low it doesn't mean the power is radiating correctly. Verticals should be on roof, with roof as ground plane. Mounting on mirrors is ok, but doesn't work as well. Also, if you have sheet metal near the antenna, it acts as a ground reflector and can distort or block the waveform. You might also try it with a different receiver, in case yours has a faulty pre-amp stage. It could also be a power amplifier problem in the transmitter, where it shows 5 watts but isn't putting out that amount. You can check it with an RF watt meter.
