How much should a starter on a 3020 diesel tractor

Does the starter get hot? In 20 seconds of use it shouldn't get more than toasty warm.

If the starter isn't heating up excessively I'd think the next thing to consider is the batteries. They don't last forever, and heavy use when starting can just wear them out to where they have a short cycle under heavy load. Check the electrolyte in the batteries too, low electrolyte will cause a battery to act just like a smaller battery than it is.

How does it run? Any smoke at idle, that sort of thing? If the pump timing is late it can make for a hard-starting motor. Is there any leakage in the fuel return that could cause the injector pump to be losing its prime? Are you getting good thick white smoke from the exhaust right from the time you hit the starter?

Honestly, 20 seconds of cranking is a lot for a diesel.. Cranking speed can be critically important in starting a diesel, and you get the best cranking speed in the first few seconds. If this motor has glow plugs go through them and make them work. If you can park it near an outlet put a block heater on it and stick a cheap hair dryer in the intake when you start it, you wouldn't believe how well that works.

If there's no way to warm it up then you gotta ether it. A can or two of ether a month can save you a lot in starter wear and hard battery use. The trick is to use as little as possible- you want it to fire smoothly with no knocking. Heating your ether can on the defrosters helps some too, just don't forget it there..

Give all this some thought, get back with me and let me know what you've tried and how it's working for you, we'll take it from there.

Sounds like its a little lean. Back out the high speed adjustment(bottom of bowl)about half turn, that should do it. If its blowing black smoke turn it in a little.

I have an l120 john

Comshaw,
Good, you want to do it yourself. Only problem is that the carbs have two jets, one each for the air and gas. One of them has to be adjusted while the other one is fully tight. Please check which one is fully tight and remember it. The other has to be tightened fully initially and then unwound two and a half turns or so. Just remember to differentiate between the two. Other wise you can strip it completely without breaking any thing. Also keep a notebook handy to not down what you did when and how. For future use and also while assembling it. You can even use gas to wash it with. It would be as clean as it could be. When you run the engine after reassembling the carb you must adjust the not tight jet to get the correct engine RPM. The idea is that if it is low then the engine would tend to stall while if it is high the RPM would go up and waste the precious fuel. So depent on your ears to get the correct RPM unless it has a tachometer. All the best.

I am looking for a diagram of la 140 carburetor.

Sounds like you may need to remove the fuel line from the carb that comes from the tank and see if you have fuel coming out of it.If you don't,try blowing back through it to see if you have a blockage[remove the gas cap first].If you can't blow back through it then you either need a filter,a fuel line or the tank is plugged. If you did get gas to the carb the you need to take the fuel bowl off the carb ,pull the needle pin out and then clean the needle and seat.If none of the above works then soak the carb in carb cleaner for several hours and then clean the carb with brake clean and you should be good to go.If nothing works try a new carb.

My JD 3320 tractor frequently

Hello,

That would suggest that some of the wiring in your JD 3320 tractor are malfunctioning, Make sure all connectors are firmly seated. if possible, get a good car rewire or perhaps you can return it to the dealer for help on the rewire.
Some have seen this error code occur for the simple reason that the battery voltage was borderline low -- those computers are sensitive. So before you take it to the dealer, put the battery on a charger overnight to see if that resolves it.

Take care.

No fuel flow into carburetor

When you used the carburator cleaner, did you also blow it out with compressed air? Also, you might have to disassemble it to get to ports, and clean out the fuel float bowl, things of that nature. Also, make sure your fuel filter is clean- some restricted flow could affect it adversely. Good luck, and hope this helps.
