Have you checked the output of the alternator. got a ohm/volt meter? or a battery tester? should be putting out 14 volts. may be the voltage regulator. start there esp if you charge the battery and it runs for a hour.... hour and 1/2 then quits.

Did you open the gas valve?

if the valves are working properly and good connections and battery, i would check to see if the compression release is working. i have one in the shop that the release came apart in the engine.

indicates that e retaining unit at the top bearing of the steering box has come loose and the shaft is moving up and down unrestrained by that top bearing

There are 2 safety switches on that unit as well. Most of them are right below the steering column in the firewall area. Search that to see if that unit has them. I'd be willing to bet one of them is faulty. Most are just a push button type.

Check battery voltage should be 12v or above. Battery could have gone bad or charging system bad. Voltage draw of electric clutch pulled battery down.

If not cranking replace the battery - they do wear out.

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the automatic belt tension was blocked with grass so it was not tensioning the belt correctly. It was quite difficult to completely clean it but it has been fine ever since.

It sounds like your valves may need to be adjusted... if they are too lose or worn they won't seat properly and when the engine fires it blows back through the intake valve. pull the cover and see if the rockers are loose... it only takes one to give you a headache.

The two most popular switches that fail are the seat and break, if you have a ohm meter you can test each switch starting from the battery and moving down the line.

drain the fuel out, get rid of all the fuel additives. take the carburetor off and take apart and clean with spray carburetor cleaner. clean the bolt that goes in to the bottom real good. clean the holes in it good. put it back together and it will be good. it sounds like it has debris in there some where that needs cleaned out.
