It could be that you have the brush settings wrong for your carpet type. Check if the brushes are on number 3, if so, try dropping them down a notch or two and see if that does it. I think that the brushes when spinning spin towards you, so when pulling the vacuum back, the brushes are helping to drive, when pushing forward, you are pushing against the brushes. If the brushes are sticking out too far, it could cause bouncing/jumping. HTH :)

There could be a problem with the motor or the switch. Electrical problems like this should be done by a qualified repair person for safety's sake.

Start by checking to insure you're getting proper voltage through the cord. Make sure the bag emptor and front brush roll nozzle are installed properly as each must activate the switch for it to run. It could have a defective switch.

Does It make the noise all the time or only when the machine is moving. If it does it only when you push the vacuum that noise is normal. The older Kirby transmissions make a whining noise when pushed.

Take the belt off machine, try machine with the belt off, if motor sounds OK, try spinning the brush before putting belt on, if brush does not spin freely, see what is clogging it. I've had that exact issue with a Kirby Diamond Edition. What has happened is that the bracket inside the machine that activates the forward and back motion of the tech drive has come out of its slot. The only way to fix this is to disassemble the machine and put it back into place.

It usually means you have no filter or a defective filter in your shampooer hose,or your not using kirby shampoo.

Odds are that the problem is not with the belt or the pulley, but with an agitator (rotating brush) that isn't turning freely. Remove the rotating brush and check to see that it spins freely. If not, you would either need to disassemble it (removing the end caps) to see if removing whatever hair / diebris is stuck between the end caps and the body of the agitator, and if that doesn't cause free rotation, then it means your agitator bearings are likely bad which means you will need to replace the agitator assembly.

Check to see if the straw is present and attached correctly inside the jar.

The vacuum bag's boot and the power head or hose with piece protruding from it must be hooked up or the motor will not start. There is a switch on the bottom front that must be pushed in at the same time the slider switch where the bag's boot connects and turns must be slid to its max. That is where it must be very clean for if that switch will not move the motor will not start. Also, the electrical cords on that model were not a good make and one side only on the plug to the vacuum would always have no continuity. I hope this helps! William R!

You need a new screen on your tank. It's the little tiny round plastic one that fits onto the tank where the hose plugs into it. (not the foam one) Yours may be wedged sideways in your tank hose (this is a common occurrence) If your screen is damaged (loose around the edge) you will need to buy a new one.
