That suggests either a faulty sensor or there really is stuck paper... a piece smaller than your little fingernail could jam many printers.
If you can't see inside the thing, a vacuum cleaner with a blow function might help... but try that only through a filter
Being six years old it's probably got a fair amount of crud built-up. I generally remove the print head, on printers that have this ability, and then clean with some qtips and 90% isopropyl alcohol. If that doesn't fix it and a replacement print head is available then replace it. But consider the cost, as cheap as printers are these days you don't want to put a lot of money into a six year old printer when you can replace it just as cheaply.

I had the same problem , I entered the configuration of my linksys router and changed from mixed to B+G in the wireless tab and after that, no more problem, it connected rigth away
Frequently the feed roller will wear out and not pick up paper. Check for slight smudge mark on the paper. The machine will identify a jam if the paper does not reach a sensor.
when u put in a refilled cartage the reset will not engage ,so it will always read out of ink, check printer, etc.reset you printer manually everytime u print is the only thing u can do or buy brand new ink.and install new ink then remove this will let u print once,u will have to do this every time try xing out of prompt several times on youre computer if u r printing through it and that will work,but if u r printing on straight printer u half to reset it every time. hope this helps.
With respect to your HP OJ J4680 printer, which uses HP 901/901XL ink cartridges, it sounds like this is either a compatible/clone cartridge from overseas in which case you should not remove the orange top as it is molded into the cartridge, or you recently purchased or had the ink cartridge refilled (at Costco, etc.) and the storage clip (which seals the base of the cartridges to prevent the nozzles from drying out) is attached to the ink cartridge. If this is a storage clip, just press hard on the clips top lever at an angle to remove. just check it weather it is detecting your pc or laptop. if it is detecting check it is scanning working fine or not, if it is scanning fine you need to update firmware and check it. still getting same issue you need to replace the main pca board.

2.Make sure that there is plain white paper in the input tray.
3.On the product control panel, press the Setup button ( ).
4.Press the right arrow ( ) to select Tools , and then press OK .
5.From the Tools menu, press the right arrow ( ) to select Run Fax Test , and then press OK . The fax diagnostic test prints.
6.Review the results of the test.
·If the test lists faxing issues and solutions, the fax test failed. Follow the solutions on the printed report to troubleshoot the issue. This report is specific to your product and faxing environment, so use the solutions on the report to resolve the listed faxing issues. Repeat the Fax Test after fixing the listed faxing issues to make sure the test passes.
·If the test does not list faxing issues and solutions, the fax test passed. Continue to the next solution.
7.Try to send a fax again. If the HP fax still cannot send a fax, continue to the next solution.
