It could be a faulty power supply, or a jammed carriage belt motor. The power supplies can be replaced but given the age of the machine, it is likely to be developing other issues. I would recommend saving yourself some grief (and money) by replacing it with a current equivalent version. If that is not an option, locate the power unit and remove it. It's usually on the bottom and held in by two clips. Remove and locate the model number. Then try contacting an electronics recycling centre to see if they have one.

Not sure about your machine but my Cannon would not work when my colour ink was low. The store I bought it says the manufacturer does this to sell coloured ink as well as black. The setting might say for black ink but there is a certain amount of colour goes in as well. I hardly ever used colour as I do business letters so I purchased a black ink jet which uses a black powder and I get 3000 pages for about 75 dollars worth of black jet powder.

You're probably out of ink. Even if your printer doesn't tell you it's out of ink it may actually be low enough on ink to stop printing. If it was printing one day and stopped the next that's the most likely scenario.

If you don't use the printer often (at least once a month) you probably have cartridges drying up on you. If by chance you have an Epson or canon, the print head is inside the printer, so regardless of how many new cartridges you put in there, you will encounter the same problem. If you are using a generic or third party ink, it may be too dense or of low quality clogging yourprint head. You can try to run a bunch of print head cleanings. (your manual will tell you how) If by about 8 you are not seeing any improvement start with a new printer. Do a print head cleaning once a month ALWAYS as a preventative measure.
