You could put it in to recovery mode these are the steps Turn off your device. If you can't turn it off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time and wait a few seconds for it to turn off. Plug the device's USB cable into your computer only. Hold down the device's Home button as you connect the USB cable to it. When you see the Connect to iTunes screen, release the Home button. Have you checked your settings to see if the App you want to use to download whatever you are trying to download is able to use the internet connection? Do you have an internet connection?

If it is brought from USA it may be locked to a specific carrier. It has to be unlocked to be used with any carrier. I hope this helps.

I had the same phone and I saw online that the ios5 on top of 4.2.1 will ruin the phone altogether so if you have the money get a new phone honestly dont waste your time on a modified phone origanily from 2008 just dont trust me newer phones are quicker lighter slimer (most of the time) and strangely easier to use please take my advice and do so thank you for reading

This iphone repair is not possible, iphone 3g software is really old. whatsapp and facebook dont support that software version so I dont think it is possible
