Unlock administrator password
At some point, you'll encounter a password issue on your Toshiba laptop computer for several possible reasons. For instance, you may have decided to go back to the old laptop, and it's been a while since you last logged into it. Forgetting a password is also common if you tend to create different codes for various uses: email, network administrator user information and bank account details, for instance. Should you need to unlock a Toshiba laptop computer that runs on Windows XP, here is what you can do. Use a Windows installation CD to reset your password for your Toshiba laptop computer. This is the same one that you got when you purchased the computer. Boot the laptop using the CD in the same way that you would go through a re-installation for your operating system. Simply insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive and wait for the computer to read it. From there, you will get a prompt that says "press any key to boot from CD," so you just need to follow as instructed. Repair Windows. Once the CD starts up, you will get to a screen that will ask you whether you want to "Install Windows" or "Repair Windows." Press "R" to repair. The computer will then reboot itself after copying files from the CD into the Toshiba laptop's hard drive. Get into the control panel. After the computer boots up, you will encounter a screen that will say "Installing devices." To open the command prompt, press the keys "Shift + F10." On the command prompt, type in "nusrmgr.cpl." Change your password. Getting into the control panel will allow you to change your password using the administrator's control panel utilities. Just go through the process of designating a new password to unlock your Toshiba laptop and then exit the command prompt. Restart the laptop and try logging back in using the new password. Log on without the Windows XP installer. If you don't have a Windows bootable CD, use another computer with internet access so you can create an emergency recovery disk (ERD) that will allow you to unlock a Toshiba laptop. Browse through the internet and search for ERD software. Burn the ERD program into the blank CD and use it to reboot the Toshiba laptop that you want to unlock. The computer will automatically detect the program, so it will take you to a series of prompts where you can change your password. Just download our Login Recovery utility to recover your lost Windows passwords.

Short Circuit
Hard to say, take it to a Qualified Computer Tech, perhaps it can be salvaged? The tech can use a multimeter to ID the blown component and suggest a fix. Problem is, with most electronics these days, it's sometimes cheaper to buy a new Laptop, your Laptop is getting a bit out-of-date, maybe it's time to let her go? I have a Toshiba M35X-S311 that someone gave me, it overheats and shuts down. Your has similar specs. Trade up would be my advice.

I just installed a brand new HDD (Toshiba
Yes as long as you make sure in BIOS you have it set to boot from USB before the HDD.
On the Ubuntu site from the download page are instructions on how to create a bootable USB for Ubuntu.
Comment if you need any further help.

My Toshiba Satellite L25-S121 PC
Whenyou connect the power adapter into the laptop, does the power LED light up? Ifnot then -
The battery adapter or the adapter's power lead or the laptop's powersocket could be faulty.
Check power adapter's DCplug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltageshould be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on thebottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that isprinted on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced.
If the adapter is OK thenconnect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/batterycharging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's powersocket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position thisLED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a dry solderjoint where it is connected to the motherboard.
This can be repaired but itrequires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket andrepair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.
