Stanley Bostitch N88rh Framing Nailer Driver Piston 158582 - Answered Questions & Fixed issues

My bostitch n88rh framing nailer will fire when pointed down but wont fire pointed horizontal.

Nailers are made to use in any position so must be something simple to fix. Most likely safety contact foot, to test, remove the nails, remove the trigger to expose the firing button on the trigger valve. Connect air and dry fire onto wood or old coiled rubber hose in various positions. If the gun tests ok then carefully examine safety foot mech. and trigger for loose components missing guide or roll pin. The contact foot must push firmly up on the lever within the trigger thus pushing on the firing button. If the safety foot and trigger are in good conditon and working ok, then problem is within the headvalve and piston orings. To test piston oring, remove airline and nails, point nailer up then down again. The piston should stay in the top position. If the piston moves up /down with movement of gun, replace piston oring. If piston oring ok, remove the head and pull out the headvalve. Apply plenty of silicone paste or white grease to orings on headvalve and reinstall and test. If tests ok, then problem is worn orings in the head /headvalve. You can keep lubing or replace orings. Examine the surface within the head where headvalve orings make contact. If there are many fine scratches, even new orings will not work very well. Try to remove scratches with very fine sandpaper. Good luck

I was shooting 3 inch nains and I switched to 2

Check that the driver is returning all the way to top of the cylinder. Driver will not return to top when lower bumper is cracked, driver is bent, or piston oring is too loose/tight or low air pressure to gun. Also check that the two inch nail is the same angle as the three in. Place the nails on the outside of the rails with the heads aligned with the rail. The first nail should align with the path of the driver. If the head of the first nail is angled back away from the path of the driver, will miss fire.

My bostitch N88RH is not firing nails

May occur when headvalve or driver is stuck (will usually make a pop or click when tigger is depressed), or tigger valve has failed or safety not actually touching trigger firing pin. Easy test, remove nails, remove trigger by pushing out 3mm roll pin or bolt to expose the firing pin. Pull back nail feeder and place the nose against piece of wood ~ depress trigger with very quick motion with finger. If it fires, reinstall trigger and adjust safety foot so that the firing pin is pushed all the way in. If does not fire, replace trigger valve (usually tva6) or remove trigger valve and replace the 3 orings on the inner plunger. If you hear a pop or click when you do test above, remove head and lube the headvalve orings with white grease or silicone paste.

I have a bostitch model #N88RH. It won't drive

Using the web address below for reference, item number 46 is a small slider button on the nose of your gun. Push in on the slider and adjust the safety nose up into the gun for setting the nail deeper into the work. Good luck on your projectshttp://www.ereplacementparts.com/bostitch-n88rh-pneumatic-stick-nailer-parts-c-29443_29458_29650.html

My gun has always from day one punches out 2 nail

Nailers will double fire or at times, the driver will hit two nails with one stroke. The first issue is caused by sensitive trigger or worn orings and the second problem is caused by faulty nails (too close together in strip ) or the driver is bent slightly allowing the driver to strike the head of the second nail in line. One way to prevent double fire is to use the single trip trigger (usually white plastic). With this trigger, you must lift the gun off the work, release the trigger and press the gun against the work and pull the trigger. If you are using the black bump fire trigger and it double fires, replace the trigger valve. The issue of the driver blade hitting two nails with one stroke can be solved by examining the driver blale for damage. The blade should have a taper on the side that faces the nails. This taper is there so that as the driver hits the first nail the taper will gently push the rest of the nails slightly into the rails out of the way. If generic nails are used, make sure that the nails are designed with the proper spacing and angle. Easy test. With the gun on its side, place a strip of nails on top of the rails with the heads aligned with the angle of the rails. Move the strip of nails so that the first nail is in the path of the driver and the heads are still aligned with the rails. The first nail should align perfectly with the angle and path of the driver. If the head of first nail is in the path of the driver however the shaft of the nail is angled toward the rails, the driver blade may hit two nails. If the point of the first nail is in the path of the driver and the head is angled back toward the rails, you may have miss fire. If the nails are perfectly aligned with the rails and the path of the driver and the driver is hitting the second nail, grind more taper at the bottom inch of the driver. Good luck

How do you adjust nail

Some devices have a control knob where the air connects. If not, you have to wait for pressure to build up. A drop or two of pneumatic air tool oil in the inlet pipe each day helps a lot. If your compressor is too small, the hose too long, or too many people on one hose, you can have a problem.

Gun miss fires several times

could be a couple items. First I assume that you are using the right nail collation. Next UNPLUG the air and remove all the nails, do they slide in the magazine freely if not that could be one cause. If they do next look at the driver blade is it all the way up to the top of the nose, pull back on the nail follower to get a peak. Next GENTLY tap the nose on a block of wood and does the driver FALL down easily and if so the oring is worn not pulling the driver back up to allow the next nail to advance. Lastly look for a partially jammed nail in the nose area that might not allow free movement of the driver blade after shooting. I would have to think it is in the o ring/piston area. Let me know if you need more assistance

Stanley Bostitch N89C-Piston will not retract.

Lack of oil usually will not prevent driver from retracting (bent driver /debris / worn piston oring / cracked lower bumper / loose check valve ) . Remove nails and push driver up. It should not require much force to move driver / nor be so easy that driver fall back down under its own weight. If driver feels loose, replace piston oring. If it feels about right, most likely problem is the check valve. Remove head and pull cylinder. Look for band around cylinder covering series of holes. It should fit snuggly. If loose replace with new part or use any rubber available or series or orings to fit space. If check seal looks ok then examine lower bumper for missing pieces or cracked. Lube with silicone paste lube sold at Lowes. Parts are available at www.toolpartsdirect.com . Good holidays

My N88rh shoots two nails

N88rh uses a full round head plastic collated nails which are spaced apart enough that the driver cannot hit two nails at once. If your are using other nails that fit into your magazine that are closer together you may in fact drive two nails at once. If, however you are using the correct nail and the nailer shoots twice, then you probable have a very sensitive firing valve. You could change the TVA6 valve or change the actual trigger. To overcome this problem of double firing and you do not want to try changing the firing valve, you need to change the trigger to sequential type instead of bump fire type. This trigger is usually white and will only permit one nail to be fired. Check www.toolpartsdirect.com or bostitch.com for parts. Good holiday

Lwhere do I insert oil

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

You oil air-operated tools thru the air line itself. Some air systems have oilers installed and oil the tools automatically. Most, especially portable units, do not. Add the amount of oil the manufacturer recommends you use daily directly into the air line fitting. Using the tool then cycles the oil thru the unit. Common reasons for a nail gun to fail to drive a nail are improper nail type loaded into gun, air pressure set to low on compressor regulator and obstructions in the nail holder keeping the nails from positioning correctly under the striker. Disconnect the gun from the line to inspect the nail holder. Clear any debris you may find. Ensure your inlet pressure is within the manufacturers' tolerances and that the nails loaded are the correct pitch, head style and with the length range the tool can handle.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

Drive pin delays when retracting

I believe the drive pin is spring loaded, try oiling the moving parts, maybe inside also, or the air may not be releasing from chamber after actuating, check after lubricating

The piston on my framing

Assuming no air leaks, could be as a result of several problems. Things to check/try. Push driver up manually to full top position. This will reset the driver if it was stuck due to nail. Check for other debris in path of driver. If it very difficult to push up you will need to remove head and pull driver to check for bent shaft. If it pushes up easily and drops back down under its own weight, it needs a piston oring. If it pushes up easily/light force and stays up, fires once and stays down, then you need to replace the check valve (band or oring on the outside of the cylinder covering a row of holes). Parts are available at www.toolpartsdirect.com
If very stuck, I use a piece of driver that fits perfectly into the bottom of the gun and hit with large copper or brass hammer. If you must use a heavy hammer, remove the head and place body of gun on wood to prevent damage. Good luck

Framing gun not firing leaking air aroung trigger

You have a crumbled trigger seal. You can order a new trigger valve through bostitch. It usually takes a couple of weeks though.. Every time I order one it is on backorder. You will need to order trigger valve kit part number TVA11 $21.40. Go to the Bostitch website click on Schematics and Parts to the left then find your model nailer in the search field and select item 53 when the parts list comes up. Click add to cart to order. Another screen will pop up and ask you if you want to checkout. Any questions please post back.

Nail driver slide wont retract

You have worn o-rings. You can go to www.bostitch.com and find a breakdown of your nailer. On the left side of the page go to 'Schematics and Parts', find your model number and a parts list will come up. Unfortunately Bostitch doesn't make many repair kits for their guns, you have to order all of the o-rings individually. Replace all of them, if one or two are worn the rest are not far behind. You can order them from Stanley Bostitch or get the part numbers and find another vendor.

Bostich N88rh fires like a machine gun

You either have a piston stop bumper failure or some damaged orings. Look on the schematic and the piston stop bumper is number 11, part #107236. A lot of times the piston stop bumper will disintergrate due to becoming brittle from the compressed air and not having enough lubrication. Look for small plastic balls in the head under the valve. If you see little plastic pieces than that is what remains of the piston stop bumper. You will need to remove the valve from the head cap in order to inspect the bumper. Also inspect all orings. The slightest damage can have big effects. One other thing to look for is damage to the plastic valve that rides on 3 orings. (2 out and 1 in) I don't believe you have valve damage because you say it is firing like a machine gun. This is almost always the piston stop bumper.
