There is a sort some were and it will need to be rectified before it over heats or catches fire.check wiring without the battery on with a meter. turn every thing off and test lines then turn one thing on test then turn on something else keep doing this on all electrical equipment till you find the unit at fault.

As a safety measure, I would do (or have done) a "hot skin" test. If one of your 120vac wires is shorted to the chassis, all metal will be charged with line current. Very dangerous.

Simple to do. Get a digital VOM and a 20' (or longer) 12ga wire with alligator clips on both ends. Check the polarity of your shore power with a $5 tester from Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. Do this INSIDE and OUTSIDE, Try several outlets inside. If okay, proceed to next step.

Connect the 12ga wire to any earth ground. i.e. a copper pipe in your house, outside water meter, etc. Run the other end to the RV. Set VOM on 200vac and clip one end of VOM on the 12ga wire. Touch the other end to to various metal on the outside of the RV, like the step, frame, trailer hitch.

You may read a small voltage, like 1 or 2 volts. This is residual voltage and is okay. ANYTHING more than that and you have a shorted hot wire in the system.

I repeat: THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. GET IT FIXED ASAP.

I agree with confirming the polarity and grounding; assume nothing.

  • Dennis Reynolds Mar 07, 2016

If there was voltage on the frame our skin of the camper, MOST likely he would have already gotten shocked when he opened the door. Unless the ground was bone dry for days. This would not cause his problems even if it was "hot" on the skin. As a certified RV tech, I work on campers all the time.

My friend, sounds to me like your wiring is crossed, most likely in the breaker box connections.Open the breaker box and see if there is even ONE white wire going to the ground buss.If so,remove it or clip it off.Check this out and get back to me.I've a real neat trick for when RV is sitting for a log while and not in use.

  • Rigger DeBusk Mar 07, 2016

What I said previously about the white (common) wire being connected to the ground buss was why my old '75 Midas kept doing that. Newer systems you plug the old stuff into are set up this way and it works, BUT when you're plugged into an earlier system, it will cause a short. Just clip the white wire from the ground buss of it is connected. Mine just happened to go up to the light and hood vent over stove that I had removed anyway. You can rewire it to the old way if needed. It's only 12 volt, easy to rewire.

Make sure you have the right voltage at the "pole". It should either be 30A or 50A plug. The outlet must be wired correctly ! 30A is not a 220 plug ! Check the source FIRST, then check the AC unit for wiring issues.

Agreed, there seems to be a short somewhere. Most likely on the A/C compressor. If you can borrow a clamp-on AC (alternating current) gauge, it will help enormously in finding problems like these. A rarer case with symptoms like yours is that the A/C breaker or the main breaker is old and very weak.
You might also look into a smart charger for the coach batteries.
Lastly, sounds like something that draws high 12vDC current is on whether you're plugged in to shore power or not -- water pump, furnace, fridge, maybe even the inverter itself if it has a short.
Hard to find but easy to fix once found.

U r ovrloading the unit too much activity, that is the reason why ac condensor doesnt work but fan does its giving you the minimum try using one thing at a time before reaking havok thinking your wiring is all messed up could be something simple, step 2 could be that wires are burnt or shorted somewhere, and maybetouching something making them shortdepending on the age of the unit, driving and vibration jiggle the wires to the various different things that came with the rv just wiggle loose just go thru the wiring looking at it wher it visible hopefully it something easy but I would turn one thing onat a time, i bet it the ac unit wiring behind it.

What do I do when replacing the fuse in my RV does not solve the problem?

RV makers are often very secretive on wiring diagrams. If you have a test meter, test the voltage behind the breakers and fuses and then on the delivery side. Then check at the lights themselves.

Where is the power converter located in a 2007 forest river Cherokee camper

Look for breaker panel, usually a brown cover/door. Under fridge, on end of bench seat, or under, even the washroom on wall is used now. If all else fails, turn on all lights (12V) and listen for a small fan to come on. That's the converter cooling fan that usually comes on when you add load.

AC
SYSTEM
The following electrical components (if so equipped) will only operate when your
RV is connected to shore power: 120 to
12-volt power converter, air conditioner,
120-volt refrigerator, microwave oven, television(s), fireplace and appliances
plugged into convenience receptacles.

SECTION 6 - ELECTRICAL SYSTEM JAYCO TOWABLE

VOLT
CIRCUIT
BREAKERS
The 120-volt AC circuit breakers located in
side the main load center protect all
120-volt wiring and components in the RV fr
om circuit overloads and short circuits.
Should a circuit overload or short circui
t occur the circuit breaker protecting the
affected circuit will "trip" preventing the flow of electricity through that circuit.
If a circuit breaker trips, shut "off"
the appliance on that circuit (i.e., power
converter etc.) and allow the circuit breaker to cool down for a brief period of time.
After the cooling down period, reset the circuit breaker by moving its lever "off" and
then back to the "on" position. If the circuit breaker re-trips or frequently trips,
contact your dealer to have the electrical problem diagnosed and repaired.
A circuit breaker identification label is permanently attached to the inside surface
of the 120-volt load center.
Maintenance and Replacement
At the beginning of camping season, inspect the circuit breakers and replace as
needed. Test by turning each circuit breaker "off" and back "on". Circuit breakers
are wearable parts and must be replaced
as needed, as part of your RV
maintenance. If you have any questions, consult your dealer.
Please contact your dealer for repair assistance when replacing circuit breakers.
CONVERTER
The power converter converts 120-volt AC power to useable 12-volt DC power
when the shore power cord is connected to an external power source.
The converter has a built-in protective thermal breaker that will shut it down should
overheating occur. Overheating can be
caused by operating the converter above
its maximum power output for an extended period of time, or by an obstruction to
its ventilation air flow. To reduce converter heat build keep unnecessary 12-volt
lights and motors turned "off"
.
Keep the converter cooling fins and fan clear of
obstructions.
Inspection and maintenance
If the 12-volt power converter is not working (auxiliary battery not being charged)
check the reverse polarity fuse(s) in the converter fuse panel.
There are no
customer serviceable parts inside the converter case and the
manufacturer's warranty will be void if
the case has been removed
. If you
have further concerns contact your dealer.

Convertor will not charge the batteries and I can not find a reset or fuse for the convertor. There is a breaker for it but that is not the problem

If there is not a thermal overload reset on the convertor then it is an automatic reset built into the unit. When the convertor overloads and kicks off, it usually means that either something on the circuit has shorted out causing it to trip or you overloaded the convertor drawing too much power. Either way, if the convertor hasn't reset itself after a cool down period then more than likely, you convertor went bad and will need to be replaced.

Battery/elecrtic

You might unhook the battery and with the camper plugged in to shore power the 12v lights should work. If not check the breaker that goes to the inverter. If that is not tripped then check the power output at the converter. I would expect the inverter is shot. I replaced the one on my Jaco two years ago with (Progressive Dynamics 60 Amp Power Converter with Charge Wizard and the remote pendant)

Interior lights cycle from bright to dim and back

Most likely:
If it is a regular rhythm, look at your converter. The converter changes 120vac to 12vdc. Your interior light are 12v. A failing converter will cycle like that. Probably in the diode array and not servicable. I recommend one of the multi-stage converters. More $$$ but worth it. An alternator (on the engine) can do the same thing if the engine was running.

If irregular, it is varying loads on the power feed. Not much you can do about it except change where you hook up.
