Elec. hooked up. new battery. lights will go very dim. compressor on a/c stops working but fan still blows. can turn off a/c and converter breakers and lights come back bright. if I leave for a few days when I come back the battery is almost dead to the lights and can reset breakers and lights come back on and battery starts recharging. what's going on? There is a sort some were and it will need to be rectified before it over heats or catches fire.check wiring without the battery on with a meter. turn every thing off and test lines then turn one thing on test then turn on something else keep doing this on all electrical equipment till you find the unit at fault.

As a safety measure, I would do (or have done) a "hot skin" test. If one of your 120vac wires is shorted to the chassis, all metal will be charged with line current. Very dangerous.

Simple to do. Get a digital VOM and a 20' (or longer) 12ga wire with alligator clips on both ends. Check the polarity of your shore power with a $5 tester from Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. Do this INSIDE and OUTSIDE, Try several outlets inside. If okay, proceed to next step.

Connect the 12ga wire to any earth ground. i.e. a copper pipe in your house, outside water meter, etc. Run the other end to the RV. Set VOM on 200vac and clip one end of VOM on the 12ga wire. Touch the other end to to various metal on the outside of the RV, like the step, frame, trailer hitch.

You may read a small voltage, like 1 or 2 volts. This is residual voltage and is okay. ANYTHING more than that and you have a shorted hot wire in the system.

I repeat: THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. GET IT FIXED ASAP.

My friend,sounds to me like your wiring is crossed,most likely in the breaker box connections.Open the breaker box and see if there is even ONE white wire going to the ground buss.If so,remove it or clip it off.Check this out and get back to me.I've a real neat trick for when RV is sitting for a log while and not in use.

Make sure you have the right voltage at the "pole". It should either be 30A or 50A plug. The outlet must be wired correctly ! 30A is not a 220 plug ! Check the source FIRST, then check the AC unit for wiring issues.

Agreed, there seems to be a short somewhere. Most likely on the A/C compressor. If you can borrow a clamp-on AC (alternating current) gauge, it will help enormously in finding problems like these. A rarer case with symptoms like yours is that the A/C breaker or the main breaker is old and very weak.
You might also look into a smart charger for the coach batteries.
Lastly, sounds like something that draws high 12vDC current is on whether you're plugged in to shore power or not -- water pump, furnace, fridge, maybe even the inverter itself if it has a short.
Hard to find but easy to fix once found.

U r ovrloading the unit too much activity, that is the reason why ac condensor doesnt work but fan does its giving you the minimum try using one thing at a time before reaking havok thinking your wiring is all messed up could be something simple, step 2 could be that wires are burnt or shorted somewhere, and maybetouching something making them shortdepending on the age of the unit, driving and vibration jiggle the wires to the various different things that came with the rv just wiggle loose just go thru the wiring looking at it wher it visible hopefully it something easy but I would turn one thing onat a time, i bet it the ac unit wiring behind it.
