A ticking sound that gets louder as the engine warms up usually is an indication of the valves need adjustment. The clearance between the valve stem and the tappet on the rocker arm will get larger over time and needs a periodic adjustment. The cam chain can make noise as well, but "usually" more of a continuous noise that will change with rpm's (may quieten when accelarating/deccelerating). If it is the valve clearance, it is not an immediate concern, but should be adjusted to prevent unnecessary wear on the tappet/stem. Another way to tell is if it quitens somewhat with an oil change. Newer oil will provide more of a dampening effect on the contact between the stem and tappen, thus reducing the noise.

1980 XT250 3Y3 has a loud ticking noise in the top end. is this ok to ride?what can be done to cure this? Could it be related to cam problems

Just wanted to add - if the noise is load dependent, ie,. if the noise changes as the engine load varies you shouldn't ride it as the cause is almost certainly piston, connecting rod or crankshaft related. If the noise is engine speed related checking and repair could still be urgent - if the noise is definitely at the top of the engine and becomes louder as the speed increases it indicates a cam lobe/follower sort of problem whereas if the noise tends to fade as the speed increases it indicates a worn timing chain or maladjusted valve clearances or even generally worn valve gear.

What is ticking noise from passenger side of motor?

Michael, check your engines oil level right away, low or dirty oil is the main cause. Other things that can cause this issue could be worn or dirty cam lifters or tappets, exhaust leak, loose worn timing chain, possible EGR valve cracked or leaking at base, bad belt or tension er, the list could go on. I've got a slight ticking noise, but not at start-up. After the engine warms up, it will start out very faint and gradually get louder. After about 2 - 3 minutes, it goes away. This is a High M

This sounds like a tappet (cam follower/rocker arm) is at max clearance. This can be the sign of cam lobe wear or follower wear on its internal clearances or valve tip wear.

We know honda has the famous ticking noise from the engine but mine ticks louder. i dont thinking thats the timing chain. ant suggestion?

If it isn't the cam chain then it is most likely a ticking valve tappet. Have the valves adjusted and inspect the cam lobes for damage or scuffing.

Ticking from ingine while decelerating or not having torque

Continue to follow the proper "break in" procedures for new engine parts. Give the new parts a chance to wear themselves in a little bit, but also stop by the shop and tell them your concern. They can listen as well and see if they think it may be right or not. Note: the last valve job I did (6cyl. car) took about 500 miles to completely smooth out. (That's only two tanks of gas.)
