Hey i have a 1984 honda shadow 500 VT the probem is that my battery fried, and since then i have put a new battery in, but now whether the key is in or not when i hook up the positive terminal it tries to start, its seems like i have a short that causes the circuit to the soleniod to be completed, not sure to rip into the starter or go further with my control wiring, have you ever heard of anything like this?

I'd give that wiring a really close and long look. You have correctly diagnosed the problem, but the question is what to address first. I'd stay away from the starter. That's not the issue. Somehow, you've melded two wires together "somewhere" that is by-passing the starter.

SOURCE: 1984 Honda Shadow VT 700 Shift Problem

Based on the information you have provided I suspect a bent shift fork in your transmission. To fix it you will have to take the transmission cover off and get at that fork. Replacing the fork is probably easiest, the labor to get to it is the expensive part.

SOURCE: 1984 VT 500 C Shadow: 1983 honda shadow -starts and runs, seems to miss ...

The fuel filter is in the tank on the petcock and is self cleaning. I suspect you have bad spark plug caps on your bike the cap is part of the wire. If you remove the wire and take a reading with an ohm meter, the cap should read 5000 ohms . Anything above or below and you should replace the cap. This is probably causing the slight miss.
