What does it take to change oil pan gasket on 2003 road king

Bring engine to operating temperature and then remove the 5/8 inch hex drain plug at the lfet front side of the oil pan. Change the filter also if the oil needs to be changed.

Take out the screws, drain the oil, remove the gasket and use brake cleaner to clean the thread holes and screws. Then put sealer like permatex on the gasket and the screws and put in back together.

On the Road King, the oil pan is on the bottom of the transmission. Usually the engine oil drain plug is the one closest to the left front of the pan. The transmission oil drain is also under there so make sure the right oil is coming out. If it looks too clean, you're probably draining the transmission.

I can't send you a picture but according to the drawing, the oil drain plug is in the bottom of the transmission oil pan. It should be the standard hex head type drain plug. Actually the drawing shows two drain plugs, one on the bottom and one on the front fo the oil pan. The countersunk hex pipe plug in the front of the pan looks like it's for draining the transmission. Notice the shape of the gasket. The engine oil is in the pan and the transmission oil drains down through the pan.

Drain the engine oil and transmission oil. Remove the bolts and drop the pan. Install a new gasket and reinstall the pan. No problem. I usually allow the transmission to sit overnight if I can and let most of the oil drip out.

It would be nice to be able to get to the bolts on the oil pan without laying on the floor but otherwise, it's not that difficult. I'd just take the oil pan off and then let everything drip for a couple of days before attempting to reinstall the new gasket. Aggrevating working with all that oil dripping everywhere.

Remove the pan, clean both gasket surfaces, wipe a light film of silicone on both surfaces, then stick the new gasket back to the surface and mount the oil pan back on.

Your local dealer can give you the torque specs, but just making them 1/2 turn past finger tight works, too. Don't ride for a couple hours after you're done, so the silicone has time to set up.

All old harleys leaked oil, so its no big deal. First try tightening all bolts to primary cover, they should be allen head, so you will need a allen wrench of correct size. To change gasket you will first need to remove floorboard to primary bolts, then all the allen bolts. Put a pan under to catch oil. scrape old gasket off and install new gasket with a small bit of rtv to hold it in place. Put everything back together.

The drain plug is on the left side of the oil reservoir pointing towards the front of the bike. The motor should be warm when you dump the oil and the o-ring should be replaced as an extra precaution (don't want to waste that new oil if you have a drip). When replacing the oil filter use a piece of tin foil to divert the oil to your waste pan.

The solutions are close, so I must assume they are HD Road King answers, just not a 1999 Road King. The drain plug is on the front (facing the forks) left side (clutch) of the oil pan. On the 1999 model the drain plug is a 3/4 inch bolt. After changing the oil, be sure to replace the O-ring. The O-ring is rubber and does not last more than a single oil change. HD charges a dollar for the O-ring, but better to replace it than to end up with your new oil all over the garage floor.
