Rough idling 2000 carbureted heritage classic

2000 Harley Heritage twin cam carborated model. Idle went from 1000 rpm to 800-850 rpm. Turned idle up to 1000 rpms. Took bike for a ride, when stopped at red-light, now idle is at 1200 rpms and goes down to 950 and back to 1100 rpms. Keeps fluctuating from 950 to 1200 rpms. Changed plugs and still does it.

It sounds as if you may have some partially contaminated fuel entering the carbs. About the only other thing I can imagine that would cause this is a very small vacuum leak at the point where the carbs mount. Carbs have even been known to shake loose at the air horn to main body gasket. Good luck!

Sorry but you have to take it to a dealer or someone with a box that can adjust the idle speed. Your fuel injected bike is just like your car, there isn't much can as an owner can do to them anymore. It's been headed that way since 1999. The days of fixing your own motorcycle are slipping away quickly. That's why I'm keeping my old bikes. I can still work on them.

Good Luck

After warm up will not idle dies at every stop

If the bike is equipped with a carburator, you could simply raise the idle speed a bit. Look at the top of the carb and you'll see a large round looking cover. On the right side of this cover, there is a small screw. This is the idle stop screw and it sets the idle speed of the engine. With the engine at full operating temperature, set the idle speed at 1000 rpm or so. Turning the screw clockwise increases the idle speed.

If you engine is fuel injected, you'll have to take the bike to a repair shop to have the idle speed adjusted.

Good Luck, Steve
