Use 10w40 in the gearbox. DO NOT use a synthetic lubricant or any oil with "Special" additives. They can mess up the clutch. Any national brand motor oil will do.
SOURCE: i have a lifan 250cc
I've found a Yamaha XV250 manual online
(Yamaha-XV250-Shop-Manual).
Doubtless there are others out there.
The good news is that most of it looks like it'll apply to the Lifan (without test yet). Other details could be interchanging and visit this Lifan Forum.
Good luck.

It is located directly under the gas tank inside the stamped sheet metal frame. To be able to see it, you'll have to take the battery out and the cradle that the battery sets on. By using a flashlight, look up inside, you'll see a wire harness and the coil, the condensor is also mounted directly to the coil.
If you are going to remove the coil, you'll have to remove the gas tank. On top of the stamped sheet metal frame there are two nuts (10mm) that holds the coil in place.
SOURCE: why is my bike not idleing properly and backfiring/popping?
Could be dirt in carb. Clean out all the jets. Could also be sucking air between manifold and head. Make sure gasket/o-ring is sealing and that there are no cracks in manifold rubber.
