How do I locate the mid fixing bolt for the cam chain tensioner. I am working toward removal of the cylinder the cylinder head.

This will destroy the timing wheels ability to correctly relay camshaft position to camshaft position sensor. 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Remove air cleaner housing assembly. 3. Remove upper intake manifold. 4. Remove valve covers. 5. Remove spark plugs, then raise and support vehicle. 6. Drain cooling system into suitable container. 7. Remove upper and lower oil pans. 8. Remove righthand engine mount bracket. 9. Remove bolts from front cover. 10. Carefully remove front cover by carefully prying at seven indicated points, Fig. 1. 11. Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise to place No. 1 position at TDC on exhaust stroke by aligning dimple on crankshaft with block/bearing junction, Fig. 2. Lefthand side cam phaser arrows should point toward each other and be parallel to valve cover sealing surface. 12. Mark rotation direction of following timing chains for reference during installation: a. Lefthand side cam chain. b. Righthand side cam chain. c. Oil pump chain. d. Primary chain. 13. Reset righthand cam chain tensioner by pushing back tensioner piston and installing tensioner pin tool No. 8514, or equivalent. 14. Reset lefthand cam chain tensioner by lifting pawl, pushing back piston and installing tensioner pin tool No. 8514, or equivalent. 15. Disengage oil pump chain tensioner spring from dowel pin, then remove oil pump chain tensioner. 16. Remove oil pump sprocket T45 retaining bolt, then remove oil pump sprocket and oil pump chain. 17. Position lefthand side cam phasers so that arrows point toward each other and are parallel to valve cover sealing surface, Fig. 6. e. Torque idler sprocket bolt to 18 ft. lbs. f. Torque oil control valve to 110 ft. lbs. g. Torque oil pump sprocket bolt to 18 ft. lbs. h. Ensure there are 12 chain pins between exhaust cam phaser triangle marking and intake cam phaser circle marking, Fig. 7. i. Torque upper intake manifold bolts to 80 inch lbs., in sequence, as illustrated in Fig. 8. j. Torque lefthand valve cover bolts in sequence, as illustrated in Fig. 9, to 106 inch lbs. k. Torque righthand valve cover bolts in sequence, as illustrated in Fig. 10, to 106 inch lbs. l. Torque timing chain tensioner to 106 inch lbs. m. Torque timing chain guide to 106 inch lbs.

Need timing gear marks for 2004 Kia Sadona 3.5L engine


Removal & Installation

3.5L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Record the radio anti theft code data.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable Engine cover Accessory drive belts Idler pulley Crankshaft pulley Power steering pump pulley Belt tensioner pulley Upper and lower timing belt covers
  4. Support the engine with a floor jack and remove the engine mount.
  5. Rotate the engine to align the camshaft sprocket timing marks with the cylinder head cover timing marks.

  6. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Auto tensioner Timing belt

To install:
  1. Ensure that the engine is set to Top Dead Center (TDC).
  2. Prepare the auto tensioner for installation by compressing it in a vise and installing a retaining pin.
  3. Install the timing belt in the following order:
    1. Crankshaft sprocket
    2. Idler pulley
    3. Left bank exhaust camshaft sprocket
    4. Left bank intake camshaft sprocket
    5. Water pump pulley
    6. Right bank intake camshaft sprocket
    7. Right bank exhaust camshaft sprocket
    8. Tensioner pulley

  4. Install the auto tensioner. Do not remove the retaining pin at this time.
  5. Check that the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks are aligned correctly.
  6. Rotate the crankshaft 1 / 4 turn Counterclockwise .
  7. Rotate the crankshaft 1 / 4 turn Clockwise to return the engine to TDC.
  8. Loosen the tensioner pulley center bolt.
  9. Apply 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm) torque to the tensioner pulley as shown and tighten the center bolt to 32-41 ft. lbs. (43-55 Nm).

  10. Remove the auto tensioner retaining pin.
  11. Rotate the crankshaft 2 revolutions Clockwise , then wait 5 minutes for the auto tensioner to adjust.
  12. Measure the auto tensioner rod as shown. If the measurement is not 3.8-4.5 mm, then repeat the belt tensioning procedure.

  13. When the auto tensioner measurement is correct, install or connect the following:

    Engine mount Upper and lower timing belt covers Belt tensioner pulley Power steering pump pulley Crankshaft pulley Idler pulley Accessory drive belts Engine cover Negative battery cable
  14. Reprogram the radio anti theft codes.

    Removal & Installation

    3.8L Engine

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
    2. Record the radio anti theft code data.
    3. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
    4. Remove the drive belt. Remove the power steering pump. Remove the air conditioning compressor.
    5. Remove the alternator. Remove the drive belt idler. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Remove the water pump pulley. Remove the intake manifold.
    6. Remove the connector bracket from the left cylinder head cover. Disconnect the right ignition coil connector, condenser connector and remove the bracket.
    7. Remove the left cylinder head cover retaining bolts. Remove the cylinder head cover from the engine.
    8. Remove the right cylinder head cover retaining bolts. Remove the cylinder head cover from the engine.
    9. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the timing mark T of the lower timing chain cover.
    10. Check that the mark of the camshaft timing sprockets are in straight line positioning on the cylinder head surface. If not rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees. Do not rotate the engine counterclockwise.
    11. Remove the oil pan. Remove the crankshaft damper pulley. Remove the timing chain cover.
      NOTE Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder block, cylinder head and timing chain cover. Before removing the timing chain, mark the right and left timing chains with an identification mark based on the location of the sprocket because the identification mark on the chain for TDC can be erased.
    12. After compressing the timing chain tensioner, install a set pin. Remove the right cam to cam guide. Remove the right timing chain auto tensioner and timing chain tensioner arm.
    13. Remove the oil pump chain cover. Remove the oil pump chain tensioner assembly. Remove the oil pump chain guide. Remove the right timing chain.
    14. Remove the right timing chain guide. Remove the oil pump chain sprocket and oil pump chain. Remove the crankshaft sprocket, oil pump and camshaft drive gear.
    15. Remove the left cam to cam guide. Remove the left timing chain auto tensioner and timing chain tensioner arm. Remove the left timing chain.
    16. Remove the left timing chain guide. Remove the crankshaft sprocket and left camshaft drive. Remove the tensioner adapter assembly.

    To install:
    1. Check the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets for wear and damage, replace as required.
    2. Inspect the tensioner arm and chain guide for wear and damage, replace as required.
    3. Check that the tensioner pin moves smoothly when the ratchet pawl is released with a thin rod.
    4. The key of the crankshaft should be aligned with the timing mark of the timing chain cover. This indicates that the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke.
    5. Install the tensioner adapter assembly. Install the crankshaft sprocket and left camshaft drive.
    6. Install the left timing chain guide and torque the retaining bolts 14-18 ft. lbs.
    7. Install the left timing chain. Be sure to install the chain with no slack between the camshaft and the crankshaft (crankshaft sprocket, timing chain guide, exhaust camshaft sprocket, intake camshaft sprocket). The timing mark of each sprocket should be matched with the timing mark (color ink) of the timing chain at installation of the timing chain.

    8. Install the left timing chain tensioner arm and torque the retaining bolts 14-16 ft. lbs.
    9. Install the left timing chain tensioner and torque the retaining bolts 7-9 ft. lbs.
    10. Install the left cam to cam guide and torque the retaining bolts 7-9 ft. lbs.
    11. Install the crankshaft sprocket, oil pump and right camshaft drive.
    12. Install the oil pump chain and oil pump sprocket. Torque the retaining bolt to 14-16 ft. lbs.
    13. Install the right timing chain guide. Torque the retaining bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs.
    14. Install the right timing chain. Be sure to install the chain with no slack between the camshaft and the crankshaft (crankshaft sprocket, intake camshaft sprocket, exhaust camshaft sprocket). The timing mark of each sprocket should be matched with the timing mark (color ink) of the timing chain at installation of the timing chain.

    15. Install the right timing chain tensioner arm. Torque the retaining bolts to 14-17 ft. lbs.
    16. Install the right timing chain auto tensioner. Torque the retaining bolts to 7-9 ft. lbs.
    17. Install the right cam to cam guide and torque the retaining bolts to 7-9 ft. lbs.
    18. Install the oil pump chain guide. Torque the retaining bolts to 7-9 ft. lbs.
    19. Install the oil pump tensioner assembly. Torque the retaining bolts to 7-9 ft. lbs.
    20. Pull out the pins on both the left and right hydraulic tensioners. Install the oil pump chain cover.
    21. Rotate the crankshaft two revolutions in the clockwise direction. Confirm the timing mark. Be sure to rotate the crankshaft in the clockwise direction.
    22. Apply sealant on the chain cover and on the cylinder head, cylinder block, and lower oil pan. Be sure these parts are free of engine oil and dirt.
      NOTE Before assembling the timing chain cover, the liquid sealant TB1217H should be applied on the gap between the cylinder head and block. The part must be assembled with five minutes after the sealant is applied.

    23. Apply sealant on the chain cover.
      NOTE The liquid sealant TB1217H should be applied on the gap between the cylinder head and block. The part must be assembled with five minutes after the sealant is applied.

    24. Install a new gasket to the timing case cover.
      NOTE It is important that the dowel pins on the cylinder block and holes on the timing chain cover should be used as a reference in order to assemble the timing chain cover in the correct position.

    25. Install the timing chain cover. Torque the retaining bolts in the proper sequence and to specification. The engine should not be started for at least thirty minutes after timing chain cover assembly.

    26. Install the timing case cover oil seal.
    27. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.

Yes, it is the cam chain tensioner. With the engine off, just loosen the tensioner lock bolt then strongly tap a few times on the tensioner casing with a screwdriver handle. This will free up the spring loaded tensioner. Now just re=tighten the tensioner lock bolt and you're done. Please rate my answer. Thanks. tombones49_157.gif

Timing chain noise

Yes, that would sound about rite the xl125 r along with all the single hondas are pron to chain noise, easy fix, remove alternator l/ h cover, also timeing cover on cylinder head, mark plate and case with screwdriver for exact replacment, undo 10 mm bolt in end of camshaft and remove the atu unit take care not to loose the locating pin from the camshaft
Remove the pin if loose, undo the 2cover bolts and remove the cam cover, locate the timeing mark on the cam wheel and turn the engine until the mark on the wheel aligns with the mark on the case at about 12 oclock, then check the position of the lower pully and mark this, undo the top wheel bolts securing it to the camshaft, gently pull the wheel of the cam slightly and then hook the chain off the wheel, the cam wheel will now pass through the case opening,the cam chain will now come off the lower wheel, and can be pulled up and out over the end of the camshaft, and replacment would be in reverse order, checking alignment of all previously noted marks and security of all fixings before rotating the engine with a spanner and check it completes a full 360 degres before atempting to use the kickstart, the tensioner is addjusted by removing the top nut from the tensioner located on top of the crankcase lh side at the rear of the cylinder, then undo the 14 mm tensioner bolt, you could try first off screwing a 4mm screw into the tensioner, where the 10 mm bolt is removed, undoing the 14mm and pulling up on the screw with a pliers while tightening the 14mm locking device, as the tensioner is automatic this would be a manual addjustment and may remove the exsess slack

How do i change the cam chain tensioners on a 1989 Honda CBR 1000F

hi the tensioner itself is bolted to the rear of the cylinder with 2 bolts, simply remove the bolts and remove the tensioner, it is unlikely this has failed however when undoing the bolts if the tensioner is working correctly you will start to feel pressure as the tensioner pushes against the tensioner blade, if this is not the case it is likely the chain itself needs replacing, at which time the tensioner blade and guide should be changed, more difficult than changing the tensioner, warning it is most important that you remove the ignition key, disconnect battery and under no circumstances turn the engine while the tensioner is removed

Can i remove the timing chain tensioner from the top of the motor on a 2000 cavalier 2.2l or is that only with a dual cam?

Hi Friend:

Your Timing Chain Tensioner is located in the Lower Front of your engine.

#1) you'll have to disconnect your negative Battery cable.

#2) Remove the Top Engine cover to give you better access to the Front of Engine.

#3) Then you'll need to remove your alternator and with wiring attached put it off to the Side you might have to tie it with a wire to secure it.

#4) then you'll need to remove your Power Steering Leave the Lines on it and Put it to the sideas well , Tie off if necessary.

#5) then Jack up the front of your car,make sure you Put Good Stands under the car to keep it secure.while you work under it.

#6) then remove the TWO front Oil Pan Bolts Only the very 2-Front ones.

#7) Then directly above the Oil pan front of the Engine you'll see your Crank Shaft Pulley Remove it, You will need a Puller to Remove it.then the Timing Chain Cover, There are Several bolts Holding it on to the front of the Engine.

#8) Remove ALL the Bolts on Timing over, then Take cover Off,It could be a Little Stubborn ,if All bolts are out for sure, Take a Small plastic mallet and Tap the Cover Easily,until it comes off.

#9) Now before you remove anything else there is a Timing Mark on the Cam Shaft and one on the Crank Shaft,NOTE: BESURE you line them marks up,The Cam Shaft Mark should be pointing Straight Down--And the Crankshaft Mark needs to be Pointing Straight up.and Lined up with the Top Timing Mark.If the are Not

NOTE: Rotate the Engine by Hand Turning the Sprockets until they are LINED Up.

Then Take off the Top Cam Shaft Mounting Bolts,then Pull Sproket and timing Chain at the Same Time.

Then Loosen the Chain Tensioner Bolt with out taking it ALL the Way OUT. then remove your Chain Tensioner.

If your this far i Recommend that you Replace The Timing Chain,Cam Sproket and Crankshaft Sproket as well.

If not the Install your new Chain Tensioner,And Just Simply Reverse the Un-Install Directions.To Put All back Together.

Do Replace the Timing Cover Seal. Using Proper Seal Remover and Installer.

Also before you put your Timing cover back on CLEAN the Surfaces of the Engine and the Cover.And Use a Gasket Sealer and Mount to Block ==Lining Up ALL your Timing Cover Bolt Holes. Let it set a Short time a Few Minutes at Least. To prevent Slipping when installing your Timing Case Cover.

1- Last Thing Torque your Timing Chain Tensioner at 89 Inch Pounds.Which rewuires a Torque Wrench.

And Torque ALL your Timing Cover Bolts at 97 Inch Pounds.Do NOT Over Tighten You'll Strip them.

MAKE Sure the Timing Marks are Still lined up.

Clicking sound at engine lower right

the chain or maybe the tensioner from chain. First step is to check the tensioner. Is always located on the line with the cam chain, fixed in 2 bolt in the engine(cilinder). locate it by watching a piece with a bolt in the center, and that piece is fixed on the cilinder with two smaller bolts. When reinstalling, screw the main bolt to retain the spring from tensioner.
If the tensioner is damaged(used) he won't be able to press well on the chain. you see that when you remove it. If you could reinstall it without screwing the bolt, that means that he's used.
Warning.
after reinstalling on the cilinder, fixed in those two bolts, make sure to unscrew the main bolt back. When you unscrew it, the spring is released on the chain to keep it tensioned.

Can u adjust the timming chain on a yamaha xj 600 1998 model

The XJ600 has a self adjusting timing chain tensioner, although it's robust enough, like the previous post say's they can stick. To remove the adjuster look at the back of the engine on the cylinder head, the tensioner is there, two bolts hold it on one above and one below. to remove the tensioner there is a spring tensioner in the centre of the unit, undo this with care it hold the pressure spring in place on the plunger. Now remove the retaining bolts very carfully, equal turns on each bolts (do not take one out fully, leaving the other in place fully tight).
Once off the engine DO NOT ROTATE the engine. The tensioner should move freely, although there is a rachet system that locks it out, if it moves out freely then it's fine. To re-fit the tensioner release the tensioner make sure it's adjusted fully inwards and use a fresh gasket. The tensioner only firs one way, if it won't fit don't force it and it can be broken easily. Tighten both retaining bolts evenly and per the removal. Re-fit the tensioning spring and retaining bolt (do not over tighten) the plunger is self adjusting from here.

this is done via a bolt on the outside of the engine located on the head but i strongly urge you to go see a qualified motorcycle mechanic due to the fact that not doing this correctly will cause massive harm to the engine and if the chain falls off then you need to get the engine pulled apart and put back on which will cost you mega $$$$

Want to tighten cam chain on xjr400

If you need to tighten your cam chain then it sounds like the automatic tensioner might need loooking at as it isn't functioning correctly, or your chain needs changing if the tensioner is working fine.
Tensioner is located at the back of the cylinder block below the carbs: remove the carbs and unscrew the bolts holding the tensioner to the block. Once removed check the tensioner has extended and moves freely on the spring. if needed strip it down and clean the mechanism and rebuild, should be pretty self explanitary how it comes and/goes together once its off the bike.
