The simple answer is - drain out the old primary oil and put in the new required amount of 1 quart.

Rebuild the starter is one possibility, also I suppose the drive gear or the ring gear is damaged. Need a bit more info to offer any more

Gears grind when shifting

Check the clutch adjustment. If it's not fully engaging it will be hard to shift into gears and it will give you the grinding sound. Buell's shift hard to begin.
