Pore idle cold w/choke/warm reves 4 or 5000 on its own

1982 Yamaha Maxim XJ 750, I was riding the bike when it seemed to be running out of fuel, switched over to reserve and went to fuel station to gas-up. All seemed to be normal, untill i went to slow down to turn into my driveway, it just kept on reving when i pulled in the clutch.I have made sure the throtle is not sticking and the choke is closing.Since that day it runs bad with the choke on cold and once wamed-up reves wildly and will not idle down.I have riden it like this a couple of times at highway speeds and it runs fine part throtle and up, but when you decell the engine it does not come down.I know it has to be something wrong with the carbs.I am an auto machanic and know carb theory, but not bike carbs.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Scott Long

its420_us,I have removed the air cleaner, its ok, i have removed the carbs and have made sure the throtles are closing completely and the choke is closing completely and the throtle cable is adjusted properly.Any other possibilities?

Next I would check the ignition timing, it may be advanced a bit.

I would start by removing your air cleaners and taking a look inside the carbs. It sounds like one is sticking somewhere. or your throttle cable is adjusted too far and keepin them all open.

Hey I have a XJ650 and have had the same problem and stripped the carbs down to find not much wrong so I talked to a guy who used to race them and he said that the the throttle shafts and bosses wear like mad in those models ,sure enough there was plenty of play which was causing a air leak a surfire fix is to chuck the carbs in the bin and get a set of mid 80s CBX750 ones.

I just bought a used 1982 Yamaha 650 Maxim. It had been sitting for some time and the Carburetors were badly varnished, so I went in and cleaned everything. I then replaced the badly dry rotted manifold...

You will have to check the float level of the carburators and hope you had used compressed air to blow out the jets!
Best still is to visit this site for more info...theres plenty in there for our type of bikes mine is XJ750RH.
Good luck.
