Take a piece of chalk (yellow) or something you can see and mark the timing mark on the harmonic balancer by the timing pointer, so when the engine is running you can see the mark. Do this with the engine off.
Take the plug wire of the timing light and put it on #1 plug wire.
Remove the vacuum line from the dist. and start the motor and shine your light on the timing pointer and see if the mark on the balancer and the pointer line up to the proper timing of the engine I am not sure what it is for a 1987 but it should be on the radiator support of the vehicle. If you need to set the time loosen the bolt under the dist. just enough to move the dist. and move it in the direction you need and then tighten it back up. Be sure to plug in the vac. advance when done.

Backfiring through the carb isn't a timing issue unless you're firing at BDC (180 degrees out).
or have bad/missing/cracked piston rings / hole in the piston.
I mean, correct me if I am wrong, but that thing IS a 2 stroke, right?

star with your crank pulley, fuond a notch mark it (witeout woks fine) then botton of timign cover mark 0, bring them together and check your distribuitor rotor points to spark plug cable for piston #1 first front to back, if not match your timimg belt jumped.

camshaft pulley has a notch which lines up with notch on cam cover at approx 11o'clock, crankshaft marks also approx 11 o'clock and the aux shaft for distributer has marks at 9o'clock

Belt covers need to be on. Timing mark on crankshaft (while on compression stroke) should line up with TDC mark on cover. then Camshaft mark, needs to line up by looking through access hole of cover, and align mark on cam sprocket with pointer on inside of belt cover.

For the timing belt or to set the timing for the ignition?

the timming marks will be behind the timing belt cover. There will be marks on the gears and also marks on the block. Line the top gear with the top mark and the bottom gear with the bottom mark. Please note that you will need to undo the battery for a few minutes and then reconnect. This allows the computer to reset itself. Hope this helps
