Check the side stand kill switch. Broken, loose or out of adjustment it will kill the bike when put in gear. The idea is to prevent starting out with the side stand down. Check the wires and connections also.

Make sure your battery connections are clean and tight the next thing to do would be see if you have power to your ignition switch if you do your switch may be bad.

Either the slow circuit of the carburetor (slow jet) is plugged or dirty. In this case you need take apart and clean your carb. Or you have changed from NO ethanol fuel to 10% ethanol fuel which will lower your idle speed and sometimes make idling erratic. In this case you can turn the idle screw in raising your idle speed or put in a larger slow jet and adjust the idle speed.

Did you mess around at the lever. Adjust the clutch lever afterwards? There are two wires on a safety switch there. If the switch got broke or the wires unplugged may cause this.
Also check for a safety switch on the kick stand. And lastly, without looking (I have my mom's 87 Rebel in my garage) I think there is a transmission switch but believe its behind a cover on the left side of the motor.
