SOURCE: 900 ss Stalling

Sounds like the carbs are getting starved for fuel as load and rpm's increase. Start with Jack's suggestion on the fuel filter and get a new one. If that doesn't do it check other items in the fuel delivery circut. Rust or scale in the tank plugging the pickup dried out fuel lines that are semi-collapsed dirt and grit in the carbs - stuff like that. Fuel delivery problems typically seem to manifest themselves in the higher gears under load. They don't show up in the lower gears when accelerating simply because the bike pulls through them so quickly. If delivery is barely adequate, it has a split second to catch up when you shift. As the duration of uninterrupted load increases, it will run out of gas before the next shift. Typically, they fire right back up after you pull over and let them sit for a minute with the fuel pump running. Does your bike do this?,,,

Check your clutch adjustment,if this is a used bike there might not be anything left of the clutch.

SOURCE: 1982 Honda 650 nighthawk; jumps and stalls when put into gear.

this may help,it doesnt sound like the clutch is out of adjustment,it sounds like the clutch plates have become stuck together,(this happens quite a bit if the bike has been parked for a while..ie over winter)..to fix it get the bike moving, down a drive way or something..then just bang it into gear, then shift into the highest gear you can by shifting without the clutch, once you have a bit of pace on simply hold the clutch lever in and work the throttle on and off all the while holding the clutch lever in,the clutch should free itself fairly quickly and should be back to normall,a lot of older bikes are good at doing this..hope this helps

This problem should be re-tagged gv650.

It's not your clutch, it's the kickstand killswitch. I had the same issue.

If you look down next to your kickstand on the left hand side you'll see a silver switch (looks like a mushroom), follow the cables up to the front end of the chasis near the sump and you'll find a black connector with two wires coming out of it. You can either bypass the connector using a piece of wire or just do what I did and clip the wires, wind them together and crimp them in a connector.

Start your bike and hey presto - problem solved.

Hope this helps.

Testimonial: "Great help.did not need to cut wires just knowing what to look at i found the switch was stuck in. So it took about 15mins to remove lube reassemble. "

Unless very experienced in motorcycle repair, I would take this bike to a reputable shop. It's really easy to commit mortal wounds that may not be apparent until your left on the side of the road or it suddenly does some weird shifting or lock-up that puts you down.

1984yamaha virago 1000. with the bike running, when I try to shift from neutral to first gear the bike stalls. I think it has something to do with the electrical.. Help!

If you are at idle, in neutral, with the clutch lever pulled all the way in, and you shift into gear and the engine dies, it is likely the switch at the clutch lever. When they fail the bike does not get the signal that the clutch is disengaged and it is safe to shift into gear. Have that switch checked. Some bikes also have a side stand switch, make sure your side stand is always up before putting you bike into gear.

Stalling problem from neutral to first gear

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, if the bike will be run without its own battery, the engine will really stall. This is because there will be no consumer for the voltage output other than the ignition system which will clamp down when the engine is revved and the voltage tends to go higher still.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.
