My Merc. has the air shocks, the air pump went bad and couldn't
maintain the pressure because of leaks. Shop wanted $800 bucks
to fix. So I converted back to coil springs, there is a kit for it $ 400 bucks

Raise car under frame then put jack under axle before removing the shock.
Can use locking pliers to hold the shaft from turning (may have to cut away dust boots). Top nuts are accessed and can be seen from the wheel wells or from the gap between the trunk and mount frame (can't see nut from this angle). Take care with fuel lines near the driver side nut.
Preventing shafts from turning on new shocks will be tough. Make sure you have a proper tool to fit top of shaft with enough room between top of shaft and trunk (gap decreases as the nut is tightened) so the tool can be removed.

How do I replace the rear axle assembly in a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis?

If you have air suspension, turn it off from the trunk. Put car on hoist and support rear axle. Make sure you support the axel well so the coil springs do not injure you when you remove the shocks and etc. Remove brake lines from brakes. Remove emergency brake cable from brakes. Remove sway bar link bolts to frame. Remove the bolts that hold axle to rear control arms. Remove rear shocks. ( these are a real pain ) Axle assembly can now be removed.

Can i chang air ride to shocks on 1996 mercury grand marques rear

You can change to regular shocks, without the air lines. Be sure to get adequate informationon weight of the vehicle. ( tire pressure & chart for front & rear on Driver door stille is a good place to look) It will give weight dimensions for front of the vehicle, loaded & unloaded (usually).

Rear needs lift

The only real fix for this problem is to tear out the original and replace with a regular spring and shock system. You can find a kit at www.strutmasters.com. These kits are less than $500 which does NOT include labor.
