Clutch slipping while cold, when warm/hot, it operates great.

Clutch slipping while cold. When warm/hot, it operates great. When I first put the bike into gear, the clutch seems to slip, and the bike starts to move but only at a walking pace 10mph.

Engine power and throttle good. Once I have traveled about 1/2 mile and shifted up into fourth gear (engine very warm), The clutch comes to life as advertised. From there on, I have no problem with accellerating.

When I stop for a few hours and the bike cools, I go thru the same problem and solution

I have a 2000 Vulcan Nomad FI & had a very similar problem. In fact, it's a very common problem with these bikes. I fixed it by replacing the Clutch Spring. (As Described here: http://www.gadgetjq.com/clutch_spring_replacement.htm

It cost me $40 and 3 hours of time with an impact wrench.

2006 v star 1100 classic w/ vance + hines slip on exhaust. I get popping at idle and decel (i'm thinking it just needs to be rejetted). The big problem, is when the bike has already warmed up (at least 5...

The popping at idle and deceleration (when the throttle is in the idle position) could be a lean mixture at idle.
A lean mixture sitting at idle for a long light would cause the engine to run hot.
Also, as the engine reaches operating temperatures, the idle will pick up.

Finding neutral

This is usually down to clutch adjustment. If the bike shifts into neutral at stand still but doesn't when hot then your clutch cable needs adjusting so you have 1/8th of an inch freeplay at the lever. Also try running on a 20/50 oil as these bikes weren't designed to run on synthetic oils( clutch slip ) Also warm the bike up properly before a ride , don't tear off with the engine cold. Happy riding.

What make and type of crankcase oil is recommended. More less have this bike with no manuals.

Been running mine now for 36,000 miles on Castrol GTX 10W40, and have had no problems!

Clutch slips

Old fluid or improper type. Doesn't the Sporty use the SportTrans fluid in the year? Other than that, maybe time for new clutch plates. Or the clutch spring may have lost it's spring.

Your clutch plates have lasted 25 years. It is probably time to get some new plates. Have your dealer get you a set of Barnett clutch plates.

Noisey gearchange

Hi Al,
I know you are looking for feedback and I hope I can help.
I have a FLHR Road King Harley Davidson and believe me It clunked real bad when I bought it (7,000 miles), I checked the clutch primary chain, well within tolerance, also Clutch plates too.
I know your engine is wet sump and the gearbox uses the same oil as the engine?
I changed my gearbox oil and also double checked level as the amount that came out wasn't enough?
Since then pure smooth cold & Hot, so maybe the wrong viscosity oil? Nice & Thick cold but when thinned due to warm up and at operating temp not coating the gears so bulk rings failing slightly?
There you go one to look at?
