Can't find sweet spot on the gear handle to engage starter?

sounds like you have a bad switch or a loose connection to the starter. thats more like a bad wire if it keeps getting harder to find the correct spot

Howto sync carbs on kawasaki zzr400

best way is to remove the carbs ! get 4 x 4mm drill bits , set carbs on a wide tickover gap on butterflies until you can get the drill bits in the gaps and adjust till all 4 carbs are set the same gaps just slightly touching the butterflie bottom edge and the drill bits trapped between them and carb venturies ! then return the tickover back to shut on the butterflies and look and see if they are all opening and closing together and gaps same after several times ! should be correct if all links are ok ! final tickover setting when fitted on bike to about 600 to 800 rpm ! while the carbs are off you could strip and clean them if you wish ! hope you understand this ! ?? cheers P...

Why when cold my bike engine misses revs on 4 and

Hi and welcome to fixya,

you can narrow down the problem by synchronizing the carburetors. Check for timing as well (use a timing light) .. It is important to time and synchronize 4 piston engines. This diagnostic check will make sure you get the most power out of your current engine configuration.

hope this helps

Carborator fuel over flow, over heat colant over

you most likely have trash in your float bowl(s). pull the plug on the bottom of your carbs. try to catch the gas in a white rag or something and look for trash. then turn on the gas and flush them out. you are definitely getting too much gas in the engine, and a stuck float could be the problem.

My ZZR 400 has no power. I've replaced the jets .

Hi there and welcome to fixya,

I can share with your sentiment there. Here's are some of my ideas, you'll need to be patient enough though.

the jets you used, is it the stock replacement or a bigger one? I would recommend using the stock jets to eliminate the possibility of it being the cause. Tune your engine using a timing light, synchronize the carburetors so each intake manifold receives the same amount of fuel on throttle. Drain the fuel form the carb reservoir (or clean the whole carbs including the jets). Adjust the air-fuel mix to standard or 2.5 -3.5 turns out. Check for hose dents and check for proper plug firing.

Make sure cylinder compression is also good otherwise you'll suffer power loss on peak RPMs at high speeds.

The above process should eliminate any possibility with regards engine idling and poor idling.

To answer your question regarding valve clearance you'll need to download the manual to assist you on dissassembly. You'll need to remove the top cover on the engine and use a feeler gauge for adjustments. I'm not sure how to find the TopDeadCenter of this particular bike but the manual should.

Hope this in any helps you out,

My problem with my zzr

How old is your battery? Has it been overcharged?
The battery voltage at rest should read 12.8Volts when fully charged. If, when it is charging from the engine, the voltage exceeds 14.8Volts, suspect an overcharge as that will damage the battery and reduce its output power. I can't see there are any shorting problems as you would notice the hot wire smell.
I remember my old Honda 4 had a battery overcharging problem, many years ago, causing the side lamps to flatten the battery within half an hour. There was no regulator fitted to that old model, all it had was a large Zener Diode to stop the voltage going too high and mine was open circuit, boiling the battery!
Hope that helps.

Triumph trident 750 '98' starting problem

Classic storage problem is moisture entering, coalescing, condensing in petrol and in electrical circuits what you' v done is right but try WD40 on low & high tension side of ignition and a dose of easy start, once running give a good run and store with cling film over open ports with a acumen type charger left on.

I have a kawasaki zzr400 1991 and im missing the air filter housing! the straight plastic bit.could anyone possibly point me in the right direction too buy one? Many thanks in advance

It is better to replace it with a performance version. K&N filters sells them on-line and you will be very pleased with the results. Changing your spark plugs to Denso Iridiums will also provide a little power boost (HP up) and improve fuel economy.
