Dead battery 2006 Honda VTX 1800

Not totally sure I understand, but the battery cranks the car/cycle then the alternator runs and recharges the vehicle and battery. If you jump off and it runs the alternator will continue to run and recharge the battery. If your battery is bad you can jump and run. If the alternator is bad and battery is low you can jump off and it will run till you remove the jump. You started with the jump but the alternator has to continue to run the vehicle. If it dies the alternator is not putting out or you have loose or wiring connection issues. Check wiring connection issue first. I think it is wiring or alternator problem.

My 2006 VTX 1800c spec 3 has a problem with the

While the starterr switch was replaced it is possible that the headlight circuit was accidently tampered which had resulted in loss of voltage to the headlamp circuit. Now to trace this out you must use a multimeter to check the voltage+12 on the fuses of the headlamp. If this is not present then the wiring needs a check from the main junction, is not check the headlamp switch and the relay circuit . Both these are areas where a loss of the +12 will indicate a failure at the outputs. You can also use a +12 park lamp as a test lamp with one side grounded and the other used as the test lead.

Throttle control does not return to idle when released

Make sure cables are not pinched. If not, ensure return spring is still attached. Most-likely, though, is that the throttle grip needs to be lubed. Disassemble the handgrip, grease the handlebar under the throttle grip and the cables inside the grip area and as far into the cable as you can, and reassemble. You might also lube the carb/throttle body linkages to ensure they can operate smoothly. If the cables are pinched and kinked, you may need to replace the kinked cable.

When warmed up my vtx

Hi.

Idle is set hooking up a scanner or a computer to the PCIII on the bike. Rather than re-adjusting idle, check for additional problems, and then eventually reset the PCIII if you do not find anything else.

On the throttle body there is also a knob to regulate idle manually. To reach the knob you will need to remove the fuel tank, take off air box cover and air box, then reach the throttle body and the knob. To take your tank off first remove the seats and undo the large bolt located under the front seat, then remove the last three bolts from the speedo housing and two green wire connectors in front of the tank, undo the tubes going into the petcock. Once the tank is free pull and lift the tank from one side of the bike.

Check that all the hoses connected to the throttle body are OK.

Replace fuel filter, air filter, and plugs.

If that does not fix the problem, check for vacuum leaks. Vacuum leaks result in lean mixture that will cause bike stalling when idle . Small vacuum leaks can be spotted spraying carb cleaner on vacuum hoses. If there was a leak, when you spray you close the leak, and the bike will rev up slightly.

Try also adding some injector cleaning to the fuel, and see if that helps.

If all the above was OK, try resetting the PCII, you can do this through the console, or disconnecting the battery. Idle settings will reset to default.

If the above is still not enough to fix the problem, test the fuel pressure. Test both fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator. The regulator is tested observing how pressure goes down after stopping the fuel pump.

Here a service manual with more details on testing procedures: Download Service and Repair Manual .

How do I check the

Follow the upper radiator hose, to the radiator cap on the left side. With the motor cold take off the radiator cap and make sure the radiator is full at that point. It is important that you fill the radiator at the cap/high point of the system, because the total volume of antifreeze in the motorcycles system may not have enough vacuum to draw the fluid all the way up from the over flow bottle and you will have cooling problems. The Shadows tend to run on the warm side any way with out the extra assistance of a low fluid level. Then find the over flow tank located near the left driver foot peg and fill it to the full mark. Use only NON SILICA formula antifreeze like Honda or GM Dexcool , the scrubbing particles in automotive SILICA style antifreeze can damage the ceramic seal in you motorcycle water pump. After your initial drive and a cool down period , recheck the level in the over flow bottle and top up as needed.

For winter storage, how do you check the strength

If you go to an auto store , you can purchase a cheap anti-freeze tester ($2-$3). Basically it is a large eye-dropper with different colored balls in side of it. When you fill the eye-dropper with anti-freeze the balls will float or sink. You count the floating balls. The chart printed on the glass eye-dropper/tube will tell you how cold you can safely operate your vehicle depending on the number of floaters.

What kind of radiator fluid do i use on my 2006

You want to use antifreeze that does not have silica particles in it. Your water pump uses a ceramic washer that is damaged by the rust scrubbing particles in some antifreeze mixes. You can purchase GM Dexcool or other brands of non silica formulas at your local auto store if you do not have a Honda dealer near by. I am pretty sure all the motorsport brands(cycle's or atv's, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, etc) use non silica formula antifreeze so it should be easy to find a product that will work with your Honda.
