05 LR3 w/ 96,000 miles. Fuel Gauge dropped to empty on a full tank and gas light came on. Fuel Gauge is not reading at all anymore, just reads as empty. What parts do I need to fix this? Sender sensors?

  • Anonymous Jul 22, 2013

how is that an answer? thats just causing more confusion and problems for yourself. There are two fuel sending units, one is the front and one is the rear. Which one? I woudn't know. Although, I would just replace both, if you're going to drop the fuel tank and dig in there. Whether its you or some mechanic. Fuel sending unit front should cost roughly $90-$120 at most. Rear - $80-$100, so its not bad at all. They're suppose to detect the fuel levels and what not. Once you've replaced these, then you'll be fine.

Repair is a major job involving dropping the fuel tank, a messy and dirty and dangerous job. It will take you at least one full Saturday to do this job if everything goes right and you have the proper parts. My free advice to you is to fill your tank every 200 miles and forget about the fuel gauge.

Fuel gauge not working

You will need to test a number of things, the fuel gauge is part of a rather simple circuit.

Battery -> gauge -> tank sensor -> chassis ground to battery

If the circuit is broken at any of the steps, your gauge will read "empty". If the tank sensor is bad, it could read empty, or if the float in the tank has sunk, it will read empty.

I start at the gauge with a "test light" that glows when it sees battery voltage. Get a light at the connection to the gauge? Good. find the sensor connection, usually on top of the tank, accessible in the trunk. Probe with test light. Light on? Good. Connect wire to ground, gauge should read "full". If all that is as I said, then the tank sensor is bad. If you don't read battery at any step, you know where the problem is.

I have a 2004 pontiac montana. for about two years the fuel guage would fold over and read 125 degrees when the tank is full. it woulld stay there until tank was empty and the needle would drop to empty,...

It could be a bad fuel gauge in the dash unit, but....
Usually it's "The bad".
The fuel level sending wipe arm and windings on the fuel sender wear and send erratic readings. The only cure is a replacement fuel gauge sender.
The check engine light should not be related to the erratic fuel readings.
"The good".
If you have over 200,000kms or 120,000 miles on your van you need a new fuel pump anyway,so have a complete assembly put in which will have a new fuel sender on it.

My service engine soon light came on and my gas gage dropped below empty and gas light came on. I stopped and filled up and the gas light stayed on for another 50 miles. The service engine light is still...

It would be nice to know why the service engine light came on and is still on. An auto mechanic can read the code for you, or a dealer, or some parts stores will sell a device to read the code that caused the light to come on.

Fuel gauge reads E when first started, jumps to F after awhile

It is more likely to be the fuel guage sender which is faulty.

2006 Chevy Trailblazer fuel gauge stays on empty

Could be a
1. Fuse - not likely, I'd expect other instrument panel problems.
2. Broken wire from fuel gauge
3. Bad fuel sender in fuel tank. Normally requires dropping the tank.

Vehicle is not that old, would think it is still under warranty?
