It may be a dying console (faulty electronics). Never heard of the compass dimming when you press the gas. Does it dim when you are in park and press the gas? If you give the console a gentle tap, does it brighten back up? Do other lights dim?
very unusual this but i havent any idea without having car in front of me ,these vehicles tend to pressurise the fuel tank and taking the cap off it releases the pressure ,very strang thats its affecting the starting though i would ask a local mechanic to have a look as from afar this is not something i can give an easy fix for .
