I have no brake lights on my 2001 cherokee sport. I have replaced the lamps, and the brake pedal switch. I have used a circuit trouble shooting lamp and get a really dull light on the brake light switch socket. I have checked all the fuses I can find. The ones under the hood and behind the kick plate. I got a fuse diagram off a jeep web-site and went to fuse # 23 on the panel behind the passenger side kick plate. That is the brake light fuse according to the diagram. It is good. Could this be a bad negative or ground connection? I used my meter and got absolutely no voltage to the brake light switch socket by the pedal. As an electrician that tells me nothing will be sent to the brake light itself. If this is a bad negative then where would be the best place to start for fixing that or whatever it could be? Autos are not wired in a manner that makes any sense to me. Thanks For Your Time, Matt Dierks

Matt, don't sound like ground problem, You get no voltage at the brake pedal switch? Put your voltmeter on that brake fuse and see if it has power. That fuse would be hot at all times, so it should have power. You sure it is a good fuse? If fuse has power look for broken power wire from fuse box to the brake pedal switch. Or use the ohmmeter function and check resistance from fuse to the brake switch.
Should be very low resistance, if high resistance look for bad wire, partially or fully broken.

There could be a fusible link under the hood off the starter relay that is burnt out.

I think I have found the problem. When I wiggle the ignition switch the turn signals and radio go on and off so I feel the issue is in the ignition switch. From what I understand the actual electronics for the switch are at the base of the sterring column behind the lower dash panel and is connected by a rod that may need adjusting.

SOURCE: Dash lights are out

You have all the fuse locations. I have seen some that after radio was put in did that. usually it turns out that re-grounding the dash or using different power supplies for the radio has corrected it. otherwise, I'd check the light switch and make sure it's OK.

Can't shift out of park, no brake lights

This is a problem with the brake sensor lockout. Most likely it is out of place or broken and shorting. It is on the brake pedal lever.

Click on the link, check fuse f13--20 amp. Not only check the fuse, check the fuse circuit for voltage, use a test lite, hot all the time.
You have to test when problem is ongoing. The fuse is for brake lamps.
At the moment, I don't know if trouble shooting one system will fix the rest? With multiple issues, I pick one system and trouble shoot.

Hello Mark.
In the brake lamp switch there are three switched circuits.
One that goes to the ECM one to your brake lamps and one to cruise control.
I suspect the circuit you are looking at that opens is for cruise control.
As you can see in the diagram for the Catera below.
For some reason the color of the wire for the output for the brake lamp is not shown although it indicates it's purpose. Eliminate the other colors and it will be that one.
If you require more assistance with the switch wiring let me know here in comments.

Has anyone had a problem with the brake lights not working on a 2005 gr cherokee lorado. Just starting to trouble shoot the problem

Yes. Check the brake light switch on the brake pedal. Follow the brake pedal up under the dash to where it connects. There will be a switch up there. This switch sometimes just gets stuck. But if that is the case, I would still replace it. Because it will stick again.
If this helps you please rate by checking the 4 thumbs up! Thanks for using Fixya.com

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee brake lights will not turn off!

the brake lamp switch is self adjusting and does not reset. once it is out of adjustment it is supposed to be replaced. however if you take it out of the car and mess with it you may be able to back it up a few clicks, but like i said it is technically supposed to be replaced and not messed with.
