Hi, the speed sensor in a vehicle controls a number of different systems and can noticeably affect the way a car will run. The speed sensor can be on the transmission, differential, transaxle or speedometer head. A bad or malfunctioning speed sensor on a vehicle can cause a wide variety of problems ranging from an inconsistent speedometer to what appear to be transmission problems.
So a vehicle with a completely dead speed sensor may stall because the vehicle is not sending the right signals to the computer and does not adjust properly to idle.

Will it cause the car to die or spudder while trying to pull out of places? And what if the gears are shifting badly but the speedometer light is still working?

SOURCE: stalls while idling and engine

Actually I am hessitant to respond to this one. The problem you are having COULD be many things, however my take is different than the others you seem to have. I believe that you are having timing issues caused by a Crankshaft Positioning Sensor, and/or Cam Positioning Sensor. Thesee are how the computer knows where they are and adjusts timing to make the engine fire at the correct time, thus it is called timing. The computer makes these adjustment is literally THOUSANTHS of a second, and if the sensor is off just a little especially at very high, and very low revolutions you will have a miss, which will at high RPM's "pop" due to it wanting to stall but because of the RPM's keep momentum, and pops but keeps running but at low RPM w/o that momentum, just stalls. I pray this helps you understand WHY I think you may have timing issues and why.

SOURCE: My 2000 Hyundai Elantra is stalling intermintantly

According to the Hyundai service website, "If there is an open or short circuit in the vehicle speed sensor signal circuit, the engine may stall when the vehicle is decelerated to a stop." This sounds like what you're describing, so you should check out the detailed troubleshooting info for the VSS at www.hmaservice.com, available free with registration.

The transmission does have a separate computer (TCM), it's a $700 plus item from the dealer, but if necessary you can get one for much less from a salvage yard. The same goes for the ECM.

My Mercedes 108se stalls when the engine has warmed up. A problem with an automatic, do I just need to adjust the idling speed?

If your Mercedes 108se is stalling when the engine has warmed up, it could be due to a number of issues. One possible cause could be an issue with the idle speed control system. This system is responsible for maintaining a stable idle speed, and if it is not functioning properly, the engine may stall.
Adjusting the idle speed may help to resolve the issue, but it is important to first identify the root cause of the problem. Other possible causes of engine stalling include:
  • Faulty ignition components
  • Fuel system issues
  • Vacuum leaks
  • Failed sensors
  • Clogged air filters
To properly diagnose the issue and determine the best course of action, I recommend having a mechanic inspect the vehicle and perform any necessary repairs. They will be able to identify the root cause of the problem and recommend the best solution.

1995 f150 4.9l auto trans. Erratic speedometer. Already replaced EECIV, PSOM and ABS sensor. Truck stalls at idle. engine runs well.

Check the alternator for bad diodes causing electrical interference . The routing of a spark plugs wire too close to certain sensors or their wiring can cause interference also . Check the speed sensor and it's wiring and routing carefully .

2004 mazda 3 starts but will not idle stalls under 2000 rpm

You need to plug it in to an engine diagnostic computer, it is probably a sensor that needs to be replaced. (Coolant temperature sensor is a probable cause) but you should plug in to engine diagnostic computer.

2005 venture van misses when you,re at cursing speed. stalls out when stopping at a stop light. hooked up to a tester and it showed a bad crankshaft sensor. put one in and did'nt solve the problem

I guess I should start by saying the code did not say the sensor was bad. It probably said the sensor signal was out of range.
If replacing the sensor fixed the code but the engine still runs rough and stalls, it could be a leaking injector or a problem with the throttle body.
You would need to know which cylinder is causing the miss.

I changed the crank shaft sensor but the car still wont start what else could be wrong if that was what the diagnostic said was wrong?

a bad camshaft sensor will cause a no start also. Engine Sputtering, Poor Acceleration, Stalling/Inability to Start. At low speeds a bad camshaft sensor will cause the car's engine to stall. The engine may also experience an inability to turn over, resulting in the car not starting. This may not happen all the time since the car's on-board computer will use the last readouts from the camshaft sensor to operate the pistons and manage fuel flow, which will allow the car to start; but if camshsft sensor. check engine light will be on, if its really bad.

My dodge dakota it idles below 1000 rpms and it sounds like its about to stall. and if i rev it up and then let off it will stall instantly. when i am driving from first gear to second it goes up to 4000...

It is actually hard to say without actually seeing the vehicle, but the target speed for your engine idle is around 750 RPM. The stalling after revving kind of depends on how high you are revving it and whether the engine is at operating temperature or not. This may be normal. Then again, it could be that the Idle Air Control (IAC) is not working properly.

The shifting from first to second at 4000 RPM sounds like a completely separate problem. This could be due to low transmission fluid level, sticking shift control solenoids, or possibly even a malfunctioning Vehicle Speed Sensor.

If the Check Engine light is on, have that checked first.

Engine will not run, it starts and stalls. when cold it somtimes run ok till it warms up then stalls. replaced both o2 sensors , no change????

SCAN IT FOR IDLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEMS.BUT OTHER POSSIBLE CAUSES TO YOUR STALLING IS BAD PLUGS AND WIRES CLOGGED FUEL INJECTORS AND CLOGGED FUEL FILTER.IF ALL IS GOOD HAVE FUEL PUMP FUEL PRESSURE CHECKED IT SHOULD BE 41- 47 PSI.

I have a 1991 Buick Park Avenue. Runs rough in

Here are the common cause of surges, cold stalls, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours.
To correct this problem I want you to get a can of intake cleaner (ABOUT $5.00) from any local auto parts store like NAPA or Carquest, do not use carburetor spray, intake cleaner only or u will damage the Teflon coating inside the throttle valve and air bypass valve, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

When I slow down to a complete stop, my 1999 chrysler sebring cuts off. Can you help me?

Possibly a transmission issue. The transmission has a "lockup" mode, where a clutch connects the engine directly to the transmission at cruising speeds. It is then supposed to unlock at lower speeds and for stopping. If it doesn't unlock, the car will stall at a stop. Try putting it into neutral (carefullly, so you don't go into reverse) as you slow down, if it doesn't stall out, it is most likely the transmission lockup mechanism.

If it stalls in neutral it is an engine issue. Bad idle control, bad ignition (it's easier to fire at high speed), bad fuel injector, bad air flow/pressure sensor... and more possibilities.

I have a 1991 buick par avenue with 3800 engine. The car periodcally stalls while it is running. It is easily shifted into neutral and restarted, but can be dangerous at high speeds. So far the garage has...

the price for the ac service sounds steep. The Stalling can be caused by ac but I have not came across this at high speed. Did they replace the Crank sensor?? Or the ICM? These can cause these issues. The crank sensor more so than the ICM. The cam sensor usually does not cause a stalling that I have ever dealt with. they will cause some issues but not at high speeds.
