I took my Chevy into the dealership last week because my warning light had came on for my power steering and the wheel is difficult to turn. I was told that the electronic sensor in my steering column needs to be replaced. Is there anywhere where i can buy this part? Or is this something i need to have done only at the dealership

It also covers 2005 Malibu Maxx
I took my 2005 Malibu to the dealership and I had the same problem however the "power steering' light came on and then my steering died. I could not steer at all. The dealer will not cover the charge and it will cost me over $800.
There are enough complaints and GM knows about this. I think there should be a general recall.
Mine does this randomly. It dings and the display shows 'Power Steering' and the power steering stops working . So far, turning off the car and restarting it has worked. If it ever stays off I will probably get rid of the car.

Where is the steering whel tank
On Monday 8/23/2010 GM sent out an official letter explaining that this is a problem and if your car has less than 100K miles it will be covered under this extended warranty. My car never made the noise but the wheel always wanted to keep turning left. Please call your local dealership or GM and get the letter so it can be fixed for free.
It doesn't take power steering fluid.
My Chevy Malibu Max will be the last Chevy I own. Instead of recalling the steering column they extended the warranty to 100.000 mile. Of course it went out at 120.000 miles that is how you made enough money to pay off your debts by screwing the working class once again.
LEAVE THIS PROBLEM TO THE DEALER, U MAYBE ABLE TO BUY THE PART,HOWEVER STEERING COLUMNS USUALLY HAVE SPECIAL SCREWS U MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE THE TOOLS FOR, I WOULD LEAVE IT TO THE DEALER TO SAVE URSELF SOME TIME AND FUTURE HEADACHES
Yes this car does not take power steering fluid. You will need to take to dealership to get fixed cause its in you steerig column and dealerships carry the part but it will cost about 1200 hundred to fix unless your warrenty still good ... are went out 2 times and dealership fix problem.
Yes, they cover the cost, provided your problem is the motor. In my case the issue was the computer module, so now I am out $800 and basically Chevy told me that that is the price of owning a car. A part that is never checked in any service and when fails has the same result as when the power steering column motor fails but the offer no recourse. I'll be buying an import!
I too have the same problem with a 2006 Chevy Malibu. It started in July at 107,000 miles. They won't pay to fix it based on the yaer and mileage. This is a manufacture defect. I have started a claim with the BBB. I am sure other Malibu owners and potential owners are not aware of this issue. I am also mad enough to make a big stink. I will make good and sure others considering Malibu's know of this issue.
Oh, I never got a letter in August 2010. I did just get a letter in November 2010 (late) saying they will fix my catalytic converter for free.
Alot of negativity about these Malibu's. Guess what I feel the same way. we bought a 2004 malibu Maxx dec. 2015 have had 3 of the past recalls come back. Went to dealer they said they have already been fixed won't stand behind there work. We won't buy Chevy again. Thanks for everyones comments. George Rutherford
Yeah we have 116,000 miles on it.

power steering light came on - wheel hard to turn -
I have the same problem, my power steering light came on while driving and the power steering went out. It was very cold outside, 10 degrees, Could this have anything to do with it? How much can I expect to pay for this repair?
Power Steering Failure on 2005 Malibu Max
I had the same problem - PS failed several times without warning - message came on the display plus steering was extremely difficult.
Techicians can interogate the trouble log - they will find the steering column must be replaced - there is a sensor or switch in the column that causes this malfunction. This is no doubt a product defect. Mine was replaced without charge.
This failure can have serious safety implications and I believe there should be a general recall.

i currently have the same problem. my boyfriend who thinks he knows it all says i need power steering fluid. i got some but cant even figure out where to put it!!!!
cant go to the shop cuz its sat night. ima c if the dealership is open tomorrow but in the meantime, should i put power steering fluid in? and does anyone know WHERE to put it? im thinking it in one of the two holes at the top (looking under the hood). the one on the right is my best guess.... idk
I need to add power steering fluid but i can't figure out where
I have a 2005 Chevy Malibu LS V6. I was headed to work this morning and put on brakes at the stop sign and my power steering signal came on across my dash. We have looked for the power steering and tranmission dip stick. This is unfair to us as chevy owners bc all this time while going to have my oil checked they have told me that they were checking it.
read NYTIMES 7/27/12 an article about the T.S.B 10183A issue by GM on may 23
Rock Auto Parts has the part. Is this really the problem.
