Hello schuetzbrn

I would strongly suggest that the next time this happens to you, go to Autozone and ask them to scan your Jeep for the code. this will be your best bet at knowing what it is and what to do next. Go from there. it shouldn't be a major problem if the engine light doesn't stay on.

I would suggest that you replace the gas cap it may not be sealing properly. On some cars and truck the engine light will come on if the cap does not seal up. It will affect EGR system
and computer there for giving you the light.

Actually, you can go to Auto Zone or anywhere else that will scan the computer as soon as you can. You don't have to wait for the light to come back on because the computer stores the trouble codes in memory.

What is the average fuel consumption of a 1996 Toyota Tamarax FX GL Wagon?

do you want to figure out how to figure yours out. a 20 year old car nothing is going to be average. to get it better lose some weight in the car. meaning don't carry 500 lbs of stuff you don't need. the less it weights the less the engine has to work which saves gas use. fill your tank normal till the pump shuts off and don't pull the handle to add more fuel. then write down the mileage. drive the car 200 miles. fill the tank again the same way. then figure out the miles you drove and how much gas you put in the tank. if you drove 200 miles and used 10 gallons you get 20 miles to the gallon. doing a tune up and checking your air in the tires can increase the mileage. good idea to check it first before doing the tune up to show it did some good. I did a tune up once and got almost 5 more miles to the gallon after

2009 jeep patriot. the check engine light cam on took it to auto zone and they said it was a gas cap. they fiddled with it and shut the code off. i drove it less then 10 miles and it is back on.

Did you replace the gas cap? A gas cap that does not seal properly will allow air to be drawn into the evap system and will give you a corresponding check engine light and code. Caps are relatively inexpensive, so buy one and replace your old one.

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with the 4.0L. It has approximately 150k miles on it. I started the Jeep with 1/4 tank of fuel in it and it started rough and acted like it was going to die....

long post.
ill reduce it for you.
misfires. (is RPM below 700 then misfire can be normal) for idle speed controls dead.
ISC the isc controls speed, of idle,.
mine stuck like zillion times, in 400k miles. endless.sticking
mine was a tiny gutless stepper motor drive ISC valve.
the cone valve is side gets nasty and sticks (
(PCV gases caused as seen on all engines)
i clean it.
the proof is the easy press of right foot easy raises idle back to 700rpm and engine stops misfiring.
ever get a tuneup this decade or running spark parts 500,0000 miles
for the new world record.?

now the tricky part of ISC, , fully explained in the SM serv. man.
the PCM learns its behaviors.
it learns all hot start settings and cold
so when you key on, it goes to the correct HISTORICAL spot.
if it can move there(sticks) engine car race.
or run too slow,
cold start would be worse, as hot isc is more closed
so if sticks there closed, the next cold start will be horrid
some newer manuals telly you to add 5% throttle if car is hard starting this is so common.

clean it. end story.

Engine quit when stopped at stop light. Acted as if it was choking then died. Tried restarting. Turns over strong, no start. Thought maybe no gas. Added gas after about 30 minutes. Started first try....

Sounds like the fuel pump is going out. Replace the filter first, as it's only $10. If that doesn't fix it, then it's probably the pump, which is $250.

Check engine light and check gas cap message is on in my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7 liter

Remove the cap and put it back on. Either the cap isn't tight, the cap isn't sealing properly or there is a leak in the tank or venting system. (start with the easy stuff first! Often the light won't go out till you have driven about twenty miles unless the computer codes are cleared with a scanner.

Dodge 318 overheating.

HI. It could possibly be the the thermostat is stuck shut. If thats the case when the vehicle warms up it will probably overheat all the time. The best way to tell is buy a new one and change it. They are usualy around $10.00 at any autoparts store. If you change it and it still overheats, it could be the waterpump.
