Check Engine light and ESC OFF light

This morning the Check Engine light and ESC OFF light came on in the 2006 Sonata that has 46K miles. This happened about 15 minutes after I strated driving and the car refused to accelerate. No matter how hard I pressed the gas paddle, it won't go past 60MPH.

I haven't gotten on the highway yet, but my lights came on the same way....ABS and ESC OFF lights, both. If anyone knows why, please let us all know. KJ

2006 Sonata.I was following my wife on the highway and noticed that her brake lights were not working. The ABS and ESC lights on the dash had come on, at that time the brake lights stopped lighting. We shut off the car an restarted it. Everything worked again. This is Labor Day weekend. We are going to the dealer on Tuesday. On solution suggested a faulty brake switch.

I am having the same problem - "Check Engine" and "ESC OFF" - lights go on and engine goes to an idle and will not accelerate until the engine is shut off and restarted. "Check Engine" stays on for a few hours and shuts off. I have had the gas pedal assembly replaced but the problem continues. 2006 V6 GLS - 88,000 miles.

Any comments or solutions would be helpful -

My Sonata has 47,000 miles on it and about 100 miles from home today, the Check Engine light and ESC OFF light came on, power dropped and wouldn't accelerate beyond 60mph. . I was 5 miles from my destination, so I went in for my appointment. 30 minutes later, I restarted the car and the ESC OFF light was no longer on, but the Check Engine light was still on, and acceleration was good. I went home (ALMOST called for a tow). My question to the guy that got towed, did the warranty cover the work? Or was there a loophole?

I bought a 2006 Hyundai Sonata and have had the same problem numerous times. I will start my car up and the check engine light as well as the ESC OFF light come on and destroy my morning. Now I have to sit and restart my cold engine three times to get it to function (which cant be good for a cold engine). I have brought it into the dealer now 4 times and still nothing. They have done everything from replacing both the throttle and brake sensors to the obvious of telling me to push the gas pedal (quite frustrating indeed). As I type this, my car is in getting "fixed" again for the same problem. I should of just spent the extra $5000 and gotten a honda. Luckily this time the mechanic filled out a form and will call the hyundai headquarters and complain to them. I think he is finally sick of me complaining to him every other weekend.

I brought a 2006 Hyundai Sonata on Jan. 22, 2009. On Febuary 12, 2009 my check Engine Light and ESC light came on and my car barely made it to 30mph. I was highly upset because I had some where i needed to be and worst of all i havent had this car a month yet. My car is in the process of gettin fixed as, but as i read the other comments I just want to kno why are all these same cars having the same poblem and when they get fixed its the samething over again????????

for those who got the brake pedal sensor changed and are no longer under warranty, how much did it cost? i have same problem and don;t want to spend an arm/leg getting it fixed. other than this, i have been happy with car...

  • jbmont60 May 11, 2010

Ok, Solution #1, so your mechanic replaced the **brake** peddle sensor. Did you also have the gas peddle assembly replaced? My DTC codes point to the Gas Peddle not the Brake Peddle. By the way, the DTC codes for my problem are P2135, P2105, P1295. All dealing with the dual acceleration sensors being out of sync.

endine light keeps going on then off , sometimes around fueling car . local garage owner states the evac canister could be the problem and is a costly fix . what are my options and if i continue to drive car on consistant basics will i do further damage or will it just be hard to fuel car

transmission goes into safe mode after driving for 20 minutes, turning of car and re-starting (like when stopping for gas). Also will shift hard into reverse at that point. Sometimes the check engine light will be illuminated.

My 2006 Sonata did this, had to do with throttle actuator flow. a $5 can of throttle body cleaner did the trick. May help to park with the engine on a decline, remove the air flow duct going into the throttle body (out of the air filter housing), carefully spray cleaner, scrub with toothbrush, wipe clean, put duct back. Helps if you have someone turn the ingition to "on" (don't start car) and press the gas pedal a bit to get the round plate inside to move a little so you can clean better.

I had this problem with my sonata. The other day I had to start and restart my engine 43 times before the ESC OFF light went out and I was able to accelerate. I took it to the dealer and they replaced a brake light switch and said it was fine. The next morning it was doing the same thing. This time they said it was the throttle body so they replaced it and today it worked fine. We'll see tomorrow.

Before getting a new throttle body... this happened to my sonata, they get dirty, you can buy cleaner for a few bucks, I just wiped mine out (easy) and that did the trick. 5 bucks and 15 minutes.

I had an issue where the ABS and ESC lights would go on and wouldn't turn off unless I restarted the car (sometimes they would light up again even if I had restarted). This was because the speed sensor was broken on my back tire. After the dealership replaced it, (under the 36,000 mile warranty) all was good and I have yet to see the lights come back on.

Summary:
Issue: ABS & ESC would not turn off
Solution: Replaced broken speed sensor on tire

I have the same problem. I have a 2008 Sonata and yesterday, Jan 2, marked 1 year – to the date that I picked up this car from the dealership. I was on my way home approximately, 7 miles away when the car lost power and the “Check Engine light and ESC OFF light” came on. Luckily, I was able to get out of the middle lane (highway) and get on to the breakdown shoulder. I turned off the engine, waited a few minutes and restarted the car. I got it started however, the Engine light remained on. It happened again today, Jan 3. This car has 13,000 miles. An appointment has been scheduled for Monday. I totally agree with ZachGless – for a few more dollars, I too could have had a Honda. I have had more than my share of issues with this car – very disappointed. I miss having a Honda/Toyota, I don’t think I would have all these issues so early in the game.

Have problems with ESC light. Initially at the dealer they said just turn off car and restart. The light should go off and should run ok. Light came on again and this time the engine revved when shifted into drive. Turned off and restarted it was ok. Again light ESC light on and took to dealer with some printout solutions from you folks and we'll see hos this goes. Too many times for such a new car with only 40,000 miles. It's a 2006 Sonata V6. Will update men "repaired".

PJ2006Sonata : As I noted above the Sonata was brought to the dealer. Since there were "NO Brake Lights" I had Hyundai tow the car in as part of the Hyundai warranty of 5 years unlimited miles. The tow truck got their attention.
After 5 hours the mechanic replaced the brake peddle sensor.
End of problem. Evidently the peddle sensor is multi-function. The part of the switch that allowed the car to be shifted out of park was working. However the part of the switch that energized the ABS, the ESC, and the brake lights was burned out. The mechanic then reset the check engine light.
It has been 10 days with no problems.
I thank this site for your support. PJ

When a 'check engine light' (MIL=Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is turned on, there is a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) set/stored in the ECM/PCM (Engine Control Module/Powertrain Control Module). This code identifies which engine management system component/function experienced a malfunction. Once you pull/read this code, you may begin diagnosis.

Check engine light and ESC light stays on, no driving power

For some reason, the ESC system "thinks" the drive wheels are slipping and it is trying to prevent the tires from spinning.
Take the car to your local Auto Zone and ask them to scan the car for trouble codes, they will do the scan for free. Write the codes down and respond back to this post and we can start to diagnose the problem.
Good luck and let me know.
