SOURCE: Mazda 626 power steering problem

it is normal to lose your steering, bcos it it being powered by the engine, hence it can go down when the main power source dies (ENGINE)

SOURCE: Mazda 2005 RX-8 wont start... ran yesterday, lights on & sounds

I have a 2004 that had the same problem. It sounds like the engine might be flooded. The best thing to do is to remove the fuse to the fuel pump. It will be listed under the fuse cover under the hood. Mine was a 20 amp but check to be sure. With the fuse removed, crank the engine for a minute to remove any fuel flooding the engine. Replace the fuse and crank the engine in 10 second intervals without touching the gas or you will reflood the engine. This process can sometimes take awhile and will drain your battery, so have it connected to an additional power source ( i.e. another car battery or jump box). When the car finally cranks over there will be a huge cloud of smoke so don't be alarmed when it happens. Lastly some words to the wise. This process CAN ruin your starter, but is essentially the same process that the dealership will you except that they will remove the spark plugs to drain the fuel and then charge you for new ones. If this process doesn't work then you probably need new spark plugs which is going to cost quite a bit. I was quoted upwards of $525 to fix this problem until I talked to a Mazda mechanic and found out how to do this myself. Just make sure that the engine is up to running temperature before turning the car off and you shouldn't encounter this problem again. I hope this helps you, and remember that if all else fails the dealer can fix it. It won't be cheap, but they will get it done.

I almost forgot, you HAVE to get the oil changed as soon as possible because there is probably gas in the oil now.

SOURCE: 2004 Mazda 3i 2.0L -- Intake Manifold

I have had the same problem at almost exaclty the same milage. 2004 Mazda 3 3 door hatchback (5 door sedan). I was told by the service manager that there is a valve in the manifold that fails and starts flapping, sounded just like a collapsed lifter. I think this should be covered under warranty. If not the mfg warranty the emissions? .. good luck.

Hi, i owe a 04 mazda rx8, automatic transmition, i have problems with my power steering , idk what it could be, my power steering light is on and its imposible for me to move the steering wheel either...

How is your power steering level, have you checked that recently? if its full, then your power steering pump might be not working, or your rack and pinion has been damaged already.

I have a 2009 RX8 R3 w/20,000 miles on it. Just started it to go get gas and out of no where the power steering stopped working. Yellow steering wheel light w/! Is on. WTF? I know how to drive without...

One of two things have happened:
  1. Your power steering pump went out and needs to be replaced or,
  2. The drive belt that controls the PS pump broke
The RX8 has only two drive belts so if they are both fine and none are broken then it meant that the PS pump itself has went out and needs to be replaced.

Let me know what you think and dont forget to rate the solution.

Thank you and have a great day!

Mazda rx8 steering heavy

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Please try to fill in the power steering fluid on the power steering reservoir. When filling please move the steering wheel to the left and right for the fluid to go down. This can help lighten the steering wheel. Please do check if you have power steering leakage too for this may be the cause of fluid loss.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Stearing gone stiff

It's understood that the 2004 RX-8 came standard with Electric power steering.
There's a computer module for the electric steering assist too, which sounds like it has it's own diagnostic port.
On your own, I'd suggest looking for blown fuses.. beyond that it appears that any diagnosing and fixing is up to your local/preferred stealership.

2004 mazda rx8. Power steering light came on this morning and I lost power steering.

You either lost your belt, or the oil is gone from a broken hose.

I would check your power steering fluid level first. If it's full your power steering pump is bad.
