Sounds like a bad water pump or radiator. Make sure the radiator fins arent clogged or inside of radiator, water pump not circulating the coolant properly will also cause overheating, old coolant will not properly dissipate heat efficiently and may need flushed. Also make sure the coolant has a 50% mix of water as the water does most of the cooling not the antifreeze. Hope this gives you some good places to start.

Thanks, also I forgot to include that both times this happened I had no heat it would just blow cold air. Still sound like the same cause?

If no heat then your not getting hot coolant circulating through the heater core. So sounds like some sort of blockage or poor circulation. Try changing the thermostat and then have the cooling back flushed (not drained and filled but power flushed with pressure) about $50-$75. Normally when its flushed the shop can tell if there is a blockage.

Peugeot 406 coolant temp warning light

1. Check the coolant level if you have not already.

2. The most likely cause is a stuck thermostat so that when the engine is getting up to operating temp the thermostat is not opening at all - or enough - for the coolant to flow freely between the radiator and the engine to cool the heated fluid. If you check the radiator after driving and find it is cold it is a sure sign that the heated coolant that is circulating through the engine at operating temp and higher is not getting to the radiator. The first thing I would do is to change the thermostat and re-check. At the same time completely flush the coolant and replace it with new fluid of the correct spec.

The radiator fans are not going to operate when the fluid in the radiator is cold because the hot fluid cannot flow through from the engine. The fans have a temperature sensor switch.

3. If that does not solve the problem I would suspect the water pump has corroded and needs to be replaced. However from the symptoms you have described I believe a new thermo will fix the problem.

4. Don't drive the car when it is overheating. This is a certain way to blow the head gasket and potentially crack or warp the cylinder head. (In a worst case you can crack the engine block.) It will be nice and expensive to repair if you blow a head gasket or damage the cylinder head.

MERCEDES SLK 200 MANUAL 17,000 MILES Reg. 2006 Water coolant warning light. Topped up with coolant After six weeks warning light came on Topped up again After six weeks warning light again Took...

the problem could be as simple as a faulty radiator cap from your description the water that is expelled when it gets hot is not being drawn back as the radiator cools down
could be a leak in the reservoir hose
I am thinking that the low coolant sensor in the top of the radiator tank is getting an air space and that is what is activating the light
I don't think it was head gasket problem as you would be overheating or loosing coolant within days not weeks I would go to an accredited radiator specialist shop and have a pressure test done for leaks in the system including the water pump leaking when running
I am saying that the vacuum created as the coolant cools down is not as good as it should be to draw water back from the reservoir to keep the radiator full to the cap

1997 Grand Cherokee Laredo, 4WD, 5.2 V8. My Jeep overheated today. When I went to open the hood I could feel steam. So I waited for it to cool before taking the radiator cap off and see no fluid in it....

Have system pressure tested when cold and full to top. Pressure test will force coolant out and you will be able to trace the leaks location. Hopefully it's a small hose leak and not a major problem like a blown head gasket or cracked head.

Coolant boiled and no check engine light!

You would need to check out the different cooling components. The radiator cap, thermostat, fan for radiator (car should run at 195 degrees), is anything blocking the face of the radiator, are any of the cooling hoses kinked or collapsed, is the water pump circulating the coolant, is thw belt still on the water pump?

215 is not overheating. Does it keep getting hotter the faster you go? Does it cool off when slowing down or at idle? Does the Fan clutch or electric fan come on? When the engine is this hot.
