I have a 1998 ford windstar gl with 153000miles on it. Sometimes it drives fine for a while but then when its warm up it will shift down into second, it doesn't leak tranny fluid or smoke or make any funny noises, it shifts down smoothly but not when it should!!...or sometimes it won't want to shift into 3rd at all, but thats usually if ive started the car to let it warm up, so it will just shift from first to second and stay there.....what could this be?? thanks!

Your transmission fluid contain water, thats why the colour of the fluid changed to pink. And of such the clutch is slipping causing the engine to reve up before shifting - Check transmission cooler.

SOURCE: 1998 Windstar Transmission doesn't shift into gear

common problem for ford. and in these vans. Same thing to the 98 I had. I am a mechanic and couldn't figure it out. Thought pin fell out but linkage moved. Brought in to tranny shop and they ended up getting used on for $800

Has to be rebuilt if necessary

PO 147 ---O2 Sensor Heater (Bank 1 Sensor 3) don't have one of those
PO714 -- Trans Temp Sensor -heat for the slipping
PO 471 --- Exhaust Pressure Sensor -don't have that either

Two generations though, but you might be lucky if your 1998 is part of the 2nd Gen release. do you have a driver's side sliding door?
Second generation (1999-2003) Released in the summer of 1998 as an early 1999 model, the Ford Windstar was given a complete redesign. As one of the first Ford vehicles in North America to adopt the New Edge styling language, the redesign also was distinguished by the addition of a driver's side sliding door.

1998 for windstar gl..grinding noise in steering

i don't think it is the pump. The pump would generally make a noise all the time because the motor's belt is what powers your power steering pump. Sometimes you will hear it bog down the motor when it is being turned all the way to one side or the other but that sould be about it. The grinding you described sounds like a rack and pinion problem and not anything to do with the pump itself. I hope im wrong because rack and pinion fixes are much more expensive and time comsuming to repair
