The switch is worn out inside.Try a spare key if it does'nt work you will have to replace the switch.

The ignition switch is the electrical switch located under the dash, not to be confused with the ignition (key cylinder).

Add a CommentIt has the main wire harness leading to it and is held in with two nuts. There is an actuator rod leading down inside of the column that engages the switch. After time the spring inside gets worn and prevents the key from turning all the way. I would remove it (unhook the battery first so the vehicle doesn't start while removing it) and test it for resistance. Wile it is out see if the ignition cylinder turns properly.

Probably the ignition switch (not the key cylinder) on the lower portion of the column or the actuator rod leading to it.

Were you able to locate the ignition switch. There's a plug that goes into it and two small (5/16) nuts that hold it down. The rod runs along the inside of the column.

89 chevy wont start or turn over

First is to get it to turn over. Of you have a good battery and everything is hooked up. turn the key on, crawl under it and jump the starter. Big starter lead to the small one. If it turns over and or starts. replace the fusible link(part of the wires) from the ignition switch to the starter. The link could be at the starter or up by the battery.

Locked out of 1991 chevy k1500, keys in ignition and has manual locks

I'll bet your driver's outside door lock cylinder has some wear and tear. This makes it REAL easy to pick the lock.Get a similar key(like one for a similar Chevy). to use as a "jiggler" key.Put the key in the lock, and rock it up and down while you turn it,while also thumping the door near the lock. You may have to pull the key in and out some, but I bet you'll get it eventually.

I have a 2002 sunfire... and i have trouble turning it on. Once it startes it is stuck there because it will not turn at all. Once it is in this position the wipes wont work, the windows wont roll down,...

sounds like you need a new ignition, reason nothing works cause once it doese turn over n starts the car the tumbler is stick in the starting position jus not far enough to keep the starter engaged but far enough the it still trying to go trough the start process which cuts the power to everything else till the ignition returns to the on postion

did you try jus turning the ignition far enough to when the starter engages jus let go of it so the car doesnt start and see if everything else still doesnt work if it dont i belive its the igniton

also with out starting it or engaging the starter as in just turning the key on to get power does anything work?

1996 Chevy k1500 will not turn over after setting in the hot sun

check the starter relay contacts and the electrical portion of the ignition switch. the heat can expand a solder point just enough to create an open circuit.

Just bought 89 chevy k1500 z71 oil gage reads 40-60 when truck is off. also the brake light wont go off

As far as the brake, your brake switch button may be stuck. It is above the brake pedal and looks like a chrome cylinder. There is a button on the end. See if you can get it loose. As far as the oil guage, the sending unit may be defective, Make sure the oil level is good in the engine.
