If all the lights are out then the 4wd switch is bad but,if it won't come out of 4wd-low then the 4wd actuator is bad or stuck. The 4wd actuator is what engages the differential from 2wd to 4wd.HOPE THIS HELPS!!!

Is transfer case actuator same as front diff actuator?

  • Ricky Peters
    Ricky Peters Apr 23, 2012

No,front differential has an actuator that engages the front axles and the transfer case has a motor that engages the the transfer case from 2 hi/lo to 4hi/lo only if it has a switch instead of the manual lever.

2500 sierra HD 4wd is stuck in neutral. this is a manual shift, not electric. Had been working fine

Put main gears into 1st.
With a gentle foot on the clutch, you can hold pressure on the selector and slowly bring pedal up so you can 'feel' something moving with the stick. If it doesn't go in first go then 'rock the box' with clutch movement at that sweet spot where it just starts to engage (in and out) and it should drop in.

1998 Chevy Suburban - service 4wd light comes on after running 4x4 for 2 mins

Well it could be the selector switch, but I doubt it.
Generally, the service light means something is not working that the computer controls. Solenoids and valves are a couple of possibilities.
The transfer case is shifted by solenoids commanded by the body computer based on the switch position on the dash.
You should be able to have a shop scan the body computer for trouble codes and proceed from there.
A basic code reader may not access the body computer.

I have a 1996 chevy blazer and dont know how to disengage from four wheel drive to two wheel drive?

As I recall the 96 blazer had electronic shifting for 2wd to 4wd. There should be a small panel on the drivers dash buttons for 2wd, 4wd lo and 4wd hi.

Simply press the desired button while stationary and if the system is functioning properly then it will shift and the light for the engaged type of drive will be lighted. Generally you would like to be in 2wd for this vehicle.

Can some explain the proper way to shift from 2wd

4wd auto: you can shift into this mode at anytime. it is good for conditions where you might need 4wd.
4wdhi:: you can shift into this at speeds up to 30mph and both of these back to 2wd while in gear.
4wd lo : stop vehicle and shift truck into nuetral ok to be rolling around 3mph shift into 4lo then put in gear same when shifting back to 2wd

I just bought a 2001 blazer 4.3 4wd and it was stuck in 4 low

It should tell you on the Shifter whether or not that you can Shift on the Fly. Check the Manual first if there is one in the Truck. Some Models had this and some Did not. Was an Extra from Factory Option.
